Granville Arcade.jpg We reported on Brixton Village, the UK's biggest 'slack-space' project, earlier this year. This 1930s market arcade is now home to temporary fashion and foodie events, all part of a drive to reuse vacant retail space in the capital. As part of this, Spacemakers are running a one-day pop-up Craft Fair in Granville Arcade tomorrow.

Many local designer makers are already signed up, including artwo and Henrietta MacPhee and there will be workshops throughout the day, including upcycling French fashion and making 'sweet works of art' for kids.

If you fancy getting involved and selling your crafty wares, you can sign up for a free stall for tomorrow's event. Tables are free but bring your own chair if you need one.

Full details of the event here including prebooking information.

Design classic that it is, our beloved Tube map has been twisted and distorted into all kinds of ulterior uses over the decades. We're no strangers to such manipulations ourselves. But how's this for the ultimate in schematic ambition? more ›

Douglas Carter Beane's new play, The Little Dog Laughed, brings gay Broadway's revenge on straight Hollywood to our open West End. And while at times it's a little too American to quite hit the notes of a perfect satire, The Little Dog Laughed still packs in enough laughs and punches to make it a fun night out. more ›

A twitstorm's been brewing over the Evening Standard's rather alarmist piece about the alleged "rebranding" of St Giles, Bloomsbury and Holborn as "Midtown". As most of us realise, Midtown's been around as property speak for the area for a good 10-15 years and yet has never caught on, probably due to the fact it's a bland Americanism that is incorrect geographically and stamps all over the distinctive area's history and culture. more ›

Lunch for a Fiver

Running since Saturday the 16th of January and until February 12th, the FT and Harden's Take a Friend for a Fiver promo promises cheap(er) eats at some of London's finest restaurants (including one we just reviewed and really liked). Through this offer, diners at participating eateries will have their total food bill for two halved and then a £5 charge added for the friend’s food. We're not sure those on strapped budgets would be able to take advantage of this promo. However, if you're planning to treat somebody to a midday munch, there's no reason not to give it a go. To have your bill reduced, you'll need to collect three vouchers from FT newspapers and then make a rez at one of the listed restaurants. Photo by Richard Parmiter via the Londonist Flickr pool.

If you're reading by RSS or mobile, or don't live in the UK, this probably won't make a lot of sense. But nuts to that. It's Friday, and there are bandwagons to be jumped on. more ›

The piece begins with wheels moving in shadowy darkness, the human figures powering them barely visible. As the stage is lit, a machine is revealed - a central wheel surrounded by smaller cogs and linked with thick swinging ropes. Four people work the wheels, ropes and cogs, moving systematically and following orders that flow from a loudspeaker. more ›

If the last thing you need is more online distraction, look away now. London Transport Museum today launched their film archive online. We've had a quick look and scratched the surface of "All That Mighty Heart" - a day in the life of London as seen by London Transport in 1962. See fleets of Routemaster buses, the control rooms of the tube, early CCTV and plenty of slicked back hair. Watch the children building sandcastles on the banks of the Thames and the Victoria Line being built. See the vintage lights at Piccadilly Circus and possibly your mum on a nightbus. BBC Radio programmes indicate the time of day and a poetic RP voice keeps you in check. Our weekend's viewing is now mapped out for us. more ›

Iceberg lettuce. It has its culinary place, we suppose, but certainly not as the main ingredient of a Caesar salad … when there's no romaine lettuce, croutons or Parmesan included in that so called Caesar. Such a mislabelled bed of leafy greens was our introduction to the new lunch delivery biz, LunchBox. Based on a quick view of their website and press materials, our expectations weren't high when they contacted us about sampling their lunches. Nevertheless, we were underwhelmed. more ›

Boris Island Under Attack

plane.jpg No, not from a small army of Ken Livingstone supporters armed with sharp sticks, but from Medway Council who have branded the proposal 'pie in the sky'. We thought it was more like 'pie in the river' but seeing as it's been on, then off, then on, then off again, it could end up being neither. Or maybe it could. Who knows? Along with the previously-stated concerns over the environmental impact of Boris Island, the council point out that the site is uncomfortably close to the liquid natural gas port at Thamesport and planes would also be 12 times more likely to be hit by birds. The number of eels in the Thames and its tributaries has dropped by 98% in five years, say scientists from the Zoological Society of London. The quantity caught in special test traps (and later released) nosedived from 1500 in 2005 to just 50 last year. The reasons are -- how else could we put this? -- slippery. more ›

Taking over Saatchi Gallery with two hundred winemakers showcasing more than a thousand wines, yesterday's Bibendum Times Annual Tasting gave those in the vino biz and those wishing to write about such transactions a fantastic sample of what to expect at London's better wine shops and restaurants in the next year or so. Sadly, Londonist didn't have the time (or resolve) to taste every bottle offered. But we did our darnedest! Here's a round up of our faves from the day. more ›
