A chilly and sunny morning will give way to clouds and snow this evening. As the clouds move in today's high should creep up to the freezing mark. Snow will likely start late this evening as an Alberta Clipper moves over the eastern Great Lakes. Only 1-2 inches of snow are expected and it wouldn't surprise Gothamist if the southern and eastern reaches of the city received only a dusting. If you're in the mood for serious snow head upstate where portions of Ulster and Dutchess Counties should get 6-10 inches.
Next Wednesday a cornucopia of comedians (Dave Attell, Louis C.K., Artie Lange and more) will gather at Town Hall for the The Gerry Red Wilson Foundation Comedy Benefit. Greg Fitzsimmons is one of the comedians responsible for putting together the show, which will raise awareness about meningitis (a disease that struck three people in his life, one of which was Gerry Red Wilson). The late-winter weather rollercoaster continues on its up and down journey this week. After a cool weekend today will be the most pleasant day of the week. A weak high pressure system sliding out to sea will keep the skies mostly sunny. Highs today will be in the mid-40s.
Snoop Dogg, in town shooting BET interviews last week, was caught green-handed with the drug he claimed to give up at age 30: pot. The rapper was busted outside of hotspot Lotus last Wednesday for marijuana possession, and was issued a desk appearance ticket. The Post reports that didn't stop Snoop from partying the very next night, with his 25-strong posse, at Serafina and the tapas lounge Lollipop (somewhere in between they ordered 15 pizzas, so we're guessing there may have been some weed around that night, too!). During one of the BET interviews, he claimed the accusation was "bogus".
After January hype - which resulted in rain - and a brief moment of snow last week, a winter snow storm finally made an appearance this year. Two weather disturbances resulted in many inches of snow falling in the region: By 2PM, more than 6 inches fell in the city, which is the biggest snowfall in two years and the biggest daily snowfall on the books (old record: 5.7 inches in 1948).
There’s usually not much mystery to a Be Your Own Pet show. You get about a half-hour of nonstop, rapid-fire post-adolescent punk, with lots of shouting and shimmying from Jemina Pearl. There are far worse ways to spend an early evening in February. This Wednesday, however, things went down a bit different. About halfway through the set, some older creep started talking back to the charismatic young front woman between songs. It seemed all in good fun, with the tiny singer (jokingly?) bragging about how she’s been kicked out of bars in Nashville for fisticuffs. The dude then gets up on stage, makes some sort of kissy move towards her, and promptly gets smacked across the face HARD as the rest of the band jumped in to take him down. So yea, it Got Awkward real fast. The band brushed themselves off, shook hands with the pervy perp to call a truce with the intruder, and continued on with the rest of their set. You might think that today's forecast, warm with a chance of a thundershower, is a harbinger of spring. You would be wrong. Mother Nature lives up to her cruel mistress moniker by dangling spring in front of us while all the while holding another cold snap in a gloved hand behind her back. A warm front swept northward through town last night, raising the temperature to 62 degrees this morning. It may warm a degree or two more, probably not enough to reach the record of 68, before a cold front arrives in the early afternoon. Before it begins to cool there may be an occasional shower or possibly a thunderstorm. There's a big gob of rain on the radar just east of Atlantic City, that may just skirt the city.
The police questioned a friend of Upper East Side psychologist Kathryn Faughey, who was brutally murdered in her office Tuesday night. William Kunsman, who resides in Pennsylvania, voluntarily went to a PA state police barracks in Bethelem for hours of questioning before he was released.
Mayor Bloomberg let his feelings about H.R. 5140, the Economic Stimulus Act of 2008, which was signed into legislation by President Bush on Wednesday, be known. Mayor Bloomberg said the government "is spending money it doesn't have," and "I suppose it won't hurt the economy, but it's in many senses like giving a drink to an alcoholic."
A 55-year-old man was found stabbed to death in his Prospect Heights apartment Wednesday night. Police say that Murat St. Hilaire was stabbed in the head with a corkscrew.
The cold and windy conditions that caused problems yesterday will continue through the day today. Today's high will be around 25 but the wind chill will stay around zero degrees for most of the day. With wind chills that low it is a good idea to cover up if you will be outside for more than a few minutes. We were reminded of this when our cherubic cheeks started getting numb on Gothamist's walk to work.
Brendan Canty is the drummer for Fugazi, the rightly revered D.C. post-punk band whose page on the Dischord Records website still states "1987 - present." The group hasn’t played together or released an album since their phenomenal seventh LP, The Argument; in 2002 they embarked on what is looking increasingly like a permanent hiatus. Like his bandmates, Canty has been consumed by various other creative projects: he’s produced albums for Ted Leo and The Thermals, among others; recorded and toured with Bob Mould; composed soundtracks for film and television; directed Sunken Treasure, Jeff Tweedy's live concert documentary; and helmed an eccentric rock DVD series called Burn to Shine. Started in D.C. in 2004, each DVD is shot on a single day with a lineup of bands who each get two takes on one song in a house slated for demolition. Canty will be at The Kitchen Wednesday night to perform live soundtracks to Brent Green’s distinctive stop motion animation films; other musicians on the bill include Jim Becker (Califone) and Fred Lonberg-Holm (Wilco, Freakwater). The 8pm show is sold out; tickets for the 10pm show are still available.
As we mentioned yesterday, the writers' strike may be coming to an end. Michael Eisner leaked that we'd be hearing news of it this weekend, and the former Disney CEO was right. Today Variety reports that "the WGA has finalized its tentative agreement with the majors and will present details of the pact to members today in meetings in Los Angeles and New York."
HGH is apparently fun for the whole family, at least if you believe Brian McNamee. McNamee claims to not only have injected Roger Clemens, but also his wife Debbie in preparation for the photo shoot with Sports Illustrated pictured above. No word yet on whether any of Debbie’s DNA is in this mess, but you can buy an autographed copy of her picture here for only $35. And, since the 2008 SI swimsuit issue is due next week how can we be sure that the models are PED free?
On Wednesday, State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo crashed Fashion Week when he announced an indictment against the former superintendent of the 26th Street Armory. James Jackson had solicited bribes from fashion darling Marc Jacobs (pictured), who allegedly complied in order to secure the coveted armory space for his fashion shows. The Armory is considered a "community asset" whose space is to be used by the military and public.
So far February has been off to a rousingly warm start. The average temperature has been 10.64 degrees Fahrenheit above normal, including a record-setting, nay record-blasting, high of 68 degrees on Wednesday. The recent warm stretch, today is the 13th straight warmer-than-normal day, will continue only through tomorrow. Today will be sort of cloudy, sort of sunny with a high around 45. We may see a litttle snow early tomorrow and a little rain later in the day. The high tomorrow may sneak up to the upper 40s.
Yesterday, the police arrested a Brooklyn man who posed as a livery cab driver for two rapes in the past year, including one that occurred last Wednesday. Ryan Frison, described as 41 years old and 400 pounds, faces rape, robbery and unlawful imprisonment charges.
Roger Clemens went to Congress and spoke with congressional lawyers for five hours on Tuesday. While the meeting was private, Clemens did speak to reporters afterwards and reiterated his innocence saying, "It was great to be able to tell them what I've been saying all along -- that I've never used steroids or growth hormone." One of Clemens’ lawyers, Lanny Breuer added that Clemens "answered every question that was posed to him today.”
Professor, author and activist Robert Thurman is widely regarded as the leading American expert on Tibetan Buddhism, having been a major force in the widespread introduction of Tibetan culture and religion to the west. In 1962, Thurman became the first American ordained as a Tibetan Buddhist monk, but after a few years he shifted from strict monasticism to the more conventional lifestyle of an academic. Though currently on sabbatical to write another book, Thurman remains a beloved professor in the Religion Department of Columbia University. At the behest of the Dalai Lama, Thurman co-founded Tibet House with composer Philip Glass and others; this year’s annual Carnegie Hall benefit for the organization takes place next Wednesday, February 13th. The lineup thus far includes performances by Glass, Ray Davies, Phamie Gow, Nawang Khechog, Ashley MacIsaac, Marisa Monte, Sufjan Stevens & Tom Verlaine.
Last night the first of two meetings to discuss the future plans of (the recently landmarked) McCarren Park Pool took place. The NYC Department of Parks & Recreation and architects Rogers & Marvel unveiled their plans and how they will spend Mayor Bloomberg’s $50 million. The initial press release listed: renovating McCarren Park Pool for swimming, creating a year-round recreation center, and preserving and restoring the historic bathhouse building and entry arch, as top priorities (based on a survey).
As we mentioned over the weekend, Staten Island Chuck predicted a Giants Super Bowl victory as well as an early spring. He got the football prediction right, but what's the deal with the snow, Chuck? We tried to talk to him but his publicist would not return our calls! That forced us to look at a few weather maps, which led us to see that the snow shower was actually a harbinger of warmer weather to come. Maybe Chuck was right afterall. The snow was the result of anxious warm, moist air riding up and over the departing high pressure system that gave us a sunny day yesterday.
Grand Central Terminal gets the full PBS American Experience treatment with this documentary from filmmaker Michael Epstein (Monday & Thursday, 9:00 p.m., WNET 13). The one hour film traces the history of the terminal, its construction and its impact on New York and the rest of the world. Expect tales of robber barons, dead commuters, and of course fawning over an architectural treasure.
