Uptown Almanac has word that "up to 14 acres" of Dolores Park could close for up to two years while the much-loved park undergoes a city-approved $11.7 million renovation. Kevin Montgomery reports: "New bathrooms, better tennis courts, new playground, better grass for me to be cool on, and the clubhouse (that is currently full of asbestos) will be rebuild and open for community events/soirees/romantic evenings gazing at the skyline/epic keggers. You can read more about it in the official Dolores Park Works document here (warning: PDF!) more ›

Mugging At Knifepoint At Market And Gough

Oh dear. At around 2:30 a.m. this morning, "two men reportedly robbed a third at knifepoint at Market and Gough." No one was injured, and -- get this -- at least one arrest has been made. So, kudos to you, Chief Gascon. Read more incidents of criminal mischief at SF Appeal.

On this tepid news day, we came across a joyous new game to expedite your problem with alcohol. Chowhound had posted a new drinking game, which has since been removed (boo!), involving North Bay dreamboat/Food Network personality Tyler Florence. Eater, thankfully, saved it for all to enjoy. Check it: a reader said, "I have tried several different times to follow Tyler Florence Ultimate but I can't get past the fact that he uses the phrase, 'all right', at least 5 times a minute. It would make for an interesting drinking game...take a shot every time Tyler says, 'all right.'" We concur. more ›

MUSIC: The Winter Music Festival, presented by SF Indiefest, begins tonight with a show at Bottom of the Hill. Moody, lounge-y, goth singer Rykarda Parasol performs. Daughter of a Swede and a Holocaust survivor, her songs are stories about cold, death and isolation, among other subjects... more ›

As a John Cusack character once said, "The making of a great compilation tape, like breaking up, is hard to do and takes ages longer than it might seem." Regardless of how you might feel about High Fidelity, which trust me--is just as loved by music nerds as it is hated by others, Cusack's line remains pretty indisputable... more ›

Three women, ages 37, 77 and 34, have disappeared since January 10. The locations are "approximately 60 miles apart if you take Highway 1 straight up from Pt. Reyes to Calzadero." Sleuth Beth Spotswood has a theory that this might be the work of a serial killer. Which, of course, we hope isn't the case. more ›

Obama's State Of The Union In Five Minutes

obamasotu copy.jpg

Wednesday night began with the greatest of intentions. You were going to turn off your phone, whip out a notepad, and watch the entire State of the Union Address. It's important, as Americans, you know? Well-informed, reasoned opinions, and all that. But then, during a particularly long applause, you thought, I wonder what's on HBO, and isn't a new Millionaire Matchmaker on? Fortunately, New York Magazine has condensed President Obama's speech into five short minutes. This helpful video covers the major talking points and includes the most quotable lines from the 70-minute address. Now you can slide into conversations with the greatest of ease, and no one need know that you have the attention span of a five-year-old. [Amy Crocker]

While the mentally-disturbed and soul-free members of the Westboro Church protested several San Francisco hot spots on Thursday, the students at Lowell High School beat them at their own game. And how. more ›
