Music Preview: A Clockwork Cabaret

clockworkcabaret.jpg Brush off your stovepipe hat or plump up your bustle, for steampunk is coming to Lewisham on Saturday night. TwoBob are dedicated to bringing new music and funtime parties to South East London, and what better introduction to them than a night of 50s rockabilly from Tom Allalone and the 78s and "Dickensian folk punk" band Jarmean at the Fox and Firkin on Lewisham High Street? If you get into the spirit and dress up in full-on Victoriana you even get in cheaper. A Clockwork Cabaret, 30th January from 8pm @ Fox and Firkin, 316 Lewisham High St SE13 £4 / £3.

This is possibly one of the strangest things we’ve ever seen on stage. A series of seven ‘short visual and sound events for two performers’, A Distances is hard to explain. To the sound of endless dripping water, which makes the ICA theatre feel like a shadowy cave, the audience watches various objects slide and swerve across the stage, manipulated by barely visible strings that weave around and under the space. more ›

The ever-present threat of strikes from the RMT has manifested itself again in the shape of a series of 24 hour strikes over new rosters and outsourcing. more ›

Londonist Voted 'Best Blog About Good Stuff' By Lastminute.com

We're grinning like tomfools this morning after discovering that Londonist heads Lastminute.com's list of best UK blogs for 'good stuff'. The bookings company have assembled their pick of the country's best blogs for lifestyle, food, travel and entertainment. We're also pleased to note the high inclusion of some of our own favourite blogs, as well as many we've yet to discover. The Lastminute.com team humbly exclude their own blog, which itself offers a pretty decent roundup of cool London stuff. Thanks for the recognition, guys. It means a lot.

Last Minute Listing: Spice Blending Masterclass @ Moti Mahal

spices.jpg
Tomorrow, Moti Mahal restaurant in Covent Garden is throwing open their kitchen doors and hosting a Spice Blending class with Head Chef Anirudh Arora. Hailed as India's answer to Heston Blumenthal due to his scientific approach to spice combinations, he'll guide you through the techniques for creating marinades and pastes, followed by an indulgent three-course lunch of rural Indian dishes learnt from his travels along the pan-Indian route, from West Bengal to north India and Afghanistan. Whether you're a novice or a seasoned professional (if you'll pardon the pun), you'll return home with new skills to impress family and friends, armed with your own spice blending starter kit.
The course runs from 10.30am (if you can stomach it) until 3pm. Courses cost £75 per person. If you can't make it at such short notice they're running on the last Saturday of every month throughout the year.

Tim Key and Jonny Sweet managed to leg it from last summer's Edinburgh festival with most of the silverware on offer, scooping Best Newcomer and the Comedy Award respectively. In February, the two former Footlights are bringing the shows which won them such acclaim to the Soho Theatre. With this weather you can almost believe you're in Edinburgh during midsummer anyway. more ›

The Gherkin has long been a favourite plaything for photoshoppers. In previous instalments of Touch Up London, it's been mechanised, launched into space, sliced into edible portions and donated to the Royal Guards as headgear. This latest effort by Beyondcraziness (Flickr) shows the iconic skyscraper transformed into a multi-ton edifice of dead animal. It's never wise to think too much about the provenance of kebab meat, especially when the neighbouring street is called Houndsditch. more ›

London won't be overrun by NFL just yet, but with London's own New Orleans Saints (for one match anyway) taking on the Indianapolis Colts in Superbowl XLIV, it seems as good a reason as any to watch the match on Sunday 7th February (and more than likely call in sick on Monday since coverage starts at 9pm and the game finishes in the wee hours). Here are a few suggestions on where to watch the spectacle: more ›

“I’m Marina And The Diamonds”. A cringe-worthy introduction, but let’s clear this up; Marina And The Diamonds are a solo act. The work of Welsh/Greek Marina Diamandis, the lady herself says that we are the diamonds. When we interviewed Marina in early 2009, she had just begun recording her debut, and filled her schedule with triumphant performances across the festival circuit, including one at Camden Crawl. Her first show of 2010 is an important one, falling under MTV’s “10 for ’10” banner and with video cameras and industry bods watching her every move. Fortunately, the New Year finds a reinvigorated Marina. Supported by a new band and testing out some stage moves, there is a real sense of ‘happening’ in the air. more ›

Until 6th February Shop 82 has been turned into a performance space and is featuring 15 (and counting!) adaptations of Ovid's Metamorphoses from playwrights, musicians and dancers. The trials of staging such an event are beautifully documented by the organiser in this blog post. All performances are free - and they're even throwing in tea and cake. Drop by Wednesdays 12.30-3pm, Thursday - Saturdays 12.30-6pm. Follow the project and find out what's on, when, with who and what flavour cake there'll be at the project blog and keep up with news from the Brixton Village Spacemakers project more generally.
