Tired of your job and want to strike out and open up a coffeehouse, even though your friends think you're crazy? Jonathan Rubinstein and his successful Joe coffeehouses were profiled in the Jobs section of the Times, $14,000 espresso machine and all. Rubinstein prices his java similarly to Starbucks and his customers will wait for his beautifully brewed coffees and espressos (the image is from the Joe website). Joe has stiff competition from Starbucks, which now has 170 cafes in Manhattan, as well as from a new crop of coffee connoisseurs who are trying to fulfill their own entrepreneurial urges. Mr. Rubinstein said he recently found an ideal location, also on East 13th Street, only to learn that another cafe was scheduled to open down the block. more ›

It's possibly the most famous couple to sue over bed bugs: Saturday Night Live star Maya Rudolph and auteur Paul Thomas Anderson claim that their SoHo rental was infested with the vermin and are now suing Halstead Property and the owner, Francis Feeney! They were paying $13,500/month for a Greene Street loft (plus two months' rent, security deposit, broker's fee), but found themselves (and their baby!) bitten. Ew. The exterminator told them they would have to move out for a couple weeks, and the family hasn't been back since. more ›

Walking to the post office this afternoon, we noticed that the huge Michael Chemiakin sculpture in front of the Mimi Fritz gallery was gone, leaving only a rusted square on the pavement to mark its passing. The sculpture, "Cybele, the Goddess of Fertility", had been in front of the gallery on Prince between Greene and Wooster for as long as we can remember. On the weekends it is a huge hit with tourists-- who love to giggle and stand in front of it for pictures. In addition to the 16 boobs, Cybele features 8 butt cheeks, which are helpfully displayed using a mirror. more ›

Last night the Starbucks Salon opened with a private event for press which included a performance by Aimee Mann and free cocktails and coffee drinks. We forgot to go. While the most posh our hovel of an apartment has seen is the Dwell sample sale, our ex-boss registered at Moss; now, happily she (and you, presumably, after a date with your sugar daddy) can drink there, too. Centovini the newest venture from Moss and the people behind I Trulli and Vino is both a wine store and bar, open evenings and, soon, for breakfast and lunch (We can totally rationalize breakfast drinking, especially with the nostalgic, honest-to-God real writers like F train rider Paul Auster, though he never fooled himself into thinking that wine from a box counted. It's skateboarders versus the neighborhood as Soho residents and city agencies are eyeing the Greene Street skate shop, Etnies, for its rooftop skate ramp in a historical district. The Landmarks Preservation Commission said, "We received an application from the company, but it was never completed. So the ramp was never approved." Ha - that's totally feeding into the stereotype of irresponsible skaters! Residents have also complained about the noise from the ramp; the Post says that the ramp was "built without protective fencing or construction permits", too! Wow, that is pretty underground. But best of all is Etnies' statement:

"As skateboarders, we are used to this kind of resistance - but it doesn't hold us back! The mini-ramp will continue to be a great investment for etnies in the event the city forces us to remove it. We will donate it directly to New York skateboarders and transport it over to our friends at KCDC [skateboard shop] in Brooklyn who will keep their neighbors awake."

The cafe where my writing group always meets recently closed, so we need a new venue. We're looking for a place that could easily accomodate a group of about 10-15 people, that doesn't require your whole party to be there to seat you, and where a meal could be purchased for less than $15. Bonus points if they serve alcohol and/or good coffee. Any ideas? Alternately, how does one go about finding a good restaurant? What resources could I use? My group has met at places recommended by CitySearch and NewYorkMetro.com with mixed results (one place was pricier than advertized, one place was much smaller, etc). more ›
