The personal assistant accused of killing her boss, realtor Linda Stein, claims that the police forced her to confess. Natavia Lowery's father said, "She said [to detectives] she wanted to call her parents and her attorney, and [they] told her they called them already. They lied and coerced her." It’s become quite fashionable for the “downtown” theater scene to inject their productions with live punk rock stylings. (Though the stated intentions vary, I can’t help but theorize that it’s got something to do with a terminally unhip theater geek’s longing for coolness.) At the time Racked put their money on a Duane Reade taking over the space, but today The Post reports that John Varvados will be opening a chic boutique in the old punk rock palace. Yeah, I know what you mean. I think I’m like that certainly. I don’t really play vinyl, though I do collect all these records. But one of the reasons I like to put out these albums is because some of these things have never been available on CD, and once they are then disc jockeys can play them forever. They can’t fade away like the old 45 does that I’ve had in my drawer for 20 years, or 50 years. So basically that’s the main thing, trying to get these songs to a new audience. None of these songs would be played together at one time on the same CD. I’m sort of like curating an art show or something. Trying to show you different styles of music that are all extreme, but all unironic in real life and kind of beautiful. I don’t think any of them are so bad they’re good. more ›

Yorktown resident Ann Marie Ciarcia was charged with DWI after a car crash on Monday morning that left her daughter's friend dead. Ciarcia and her 15 year old daughter Alexa had attended a show at the Continental Club in the East Village Sunday night. They ran into Alexa's friend, Emily Cornish (who had been at the Save Darfur rally earlier in the day) and gave Cornish a ride back to Yorktown with them. Ciarcia was driving north on a southbound lane on the Saw MIll River Parkway when she hit another car. Cornish, sitting in the back without a seatbelt on, was killed, while Ciarcia and Alexa - wearing seatbelts - were injured. more ›
