The history of Emo’s is mostly speculative, and clouded in rock and roll mythos. In the first place who is this “guy named Emo” who started the whole thing by opening the first Emo’s in Houston? And what sort of mother names her child Emo? Furthermore, how did the Austin satellite grow from its humble origins as a sleaze-punk club into the powerhouse it is today? Looking back you can only gee-whiz at the amount of talent that has been in through those doors, and your ears might bleed a little too at the thought of some of the more punishing, less talented openers and headliners that are a given at any club.
All this week Emo’s celebrates their 16th anniversary with shows, including a big weekend blowout. On Friday the lounge features The Paul Green School of Rock from 7-9, while later in the evening the San Antonio band Girl in a Coma alongside Crash Gallery and Southern Drama take things up a notch. Inside, things get metal with Weedeater, Lions of Tsavo and the doom-sludge of The Roller. Saturday features the biggest surprise, however, in the form of 90s alt-rock gods Mudhoney, joined here by OM and our local garage rockers The Crack Pipes. What else is going on this weekend? That’s awesome that you asked. Red 7 has a pretty noisy night planned for Friday, what with our Golden Boys headlining alongside Safe Sex, The Ape-Shits, and the excitable punk frenzy of the Teeners.
The Mohawk will also look back to more bootleggin’ times with a Friday night ol’ timey show featuring The White Ghost Shivers, Bankrupt and the Borrowers, and the Noise Revival Orchestra. Saturday will feature a big show as well, with the Lemurs playing a show in celebration of their new EP (cover charge includes a copy). Low Line Caller will precede the Lemurs on the outside stage, while at midnight Belaire and the always-splendid Pink Nasty take things indoors.
It says here in the paper that the Sons of Hercules are playing Sat night at Room 710, which happens to be the only crack alley adjacent hangout I dare set foot into. After all, the bathrooms there are relatively sanitary, and the music there always rocks.
Awesome. I bet it's gonna be a $5 show.
