Poster image from Wikipedia Starship TroopersFriday, November 9th / Saturday, November 10thAlamo Drafthouse Lake Creek (17329 Research Blvd)Midnight, $8.25[info] | [tickets]It takes a certain type of movie to make it to midnight-movie cult status, and on first glance the big-budget gloss of Starship Troopers would seem to preclude such distinction. We're gonna come right out and say it: We're total crybabies. No seriously, we may be the most empathetic people in the entire world. Anytime that we see someone in pain, someone suffering injustice, or even something sappy and overly romantic, like a first love, it's Niagara Falls, Frankie Baby. When you see a bunch of puffy-eyed, slobbery messes walking around downtown for next week, you can blame these films. And yeah, we're fine, we've... more ›

It's hard to believe, but even our most talented artists, actors, musicians and filmmakers all had to start somewhere. You know "the journey of a thousand miles" and all that crap? It's totally true--whether those first attempts are timid baby steps or long, confident strides. This Thursday, the Austin Film Festival will pay tribute to a whole pile of tenacious Austin filmmakers--including Mike Akel, Steve Collins, Scott Rice, Jeffrey Travis and The Zellner Brothers--by screening... more ›

In fact, they like robots so much that they went and directed a movie--a slow and maddeningly arty movie--about two robots who embark on a dusty California road trip hoping to become human. Kind of like The Brown Bunny! But maybe slower. If you're looking for lively, tightly wound narrative action, move right along. However, if watching impassive robots tear up a deserted Cali highway in a 1987 Ferrari sounds like so much awesome to you, this is your film. Warning: Contains extremely creepy latex mask modeling; may cause nightmares. more ›

Whenever we hear the word “pinball” all we can think of is drinking suicides in the game room at Mazzio’s Pizza and the lyrical wonderment of “that deaf, dumb and blink kid sure plays a mean pinball” from the Who’s Tommy. You may think of that one time, at Le Fun, when you pinged and flipped and bumpered your way to a tour of the Addams Family mansion, not knowing that you were conquering one... more ›

We love pretty much every type of pirate, from the "Avast Me Hearties!" variety to the "selling one-dollar copies of The Departed on the streets of Shanghai" kind. Sure they "steal" things, but they also provide hours of entertainment - either through their rousing sea shanty sing-alongs or their reasonably priced new releases.

Tomorrow night, the Austin Film Festival presents a documentary about a lesser-known, but equally awesome class of pirates: Radio Pirates. Pirate Radio USA tells the story of low-frequency airwave bandits who use DIY broadcasting rigs to operate illegal radio stations all over the country. The film takes you inside the world of underground broadcasting, profiling a variety of outlaw DJs and the organizations bent on shutting them down.

As an added bonus, some Austin radio pirates are scheduled to attend and host a Q&A; after the film.

The contest is now closed. Thank you to all who entered.

When a documentary calls itself "Mario's Story," you have to expect that said story is not going to be a happy one. If Mario just grew up, got married, and had three kids to eat Trix with in the mornings, you think he would merit a crew to follow him around and film his every move? Nope. more ›

For VICE Guide to Travel, various correspondents from the magazine were sent off to explore some of the world's more exotic and dangerous destinations. The seven documentary shorts follow them as they hunt for radioactive wolves in Chernobyl, discover the remnants of Elisabeth Nietzsche's failed Aryan paradise in South America, and look for a fabled lake monster deep in the Congo. Some of the footage is hilarious; most of it, downright shocking. And, as befits Vice, half of the correspondents are either smashed or hungover during most of it. more ›
