Those of us who have been naughty all year might well prosper in this economy; we'll be lucky if Santa brings us coal (seriously, did you know that you could heat your house with this stuff?!). For the rest of you, who have no doubt been nicer, crafty elves all over town are coming together to hock their wares at various holiday art fairs. Shopping for local, handmade gifts cuts out a lot of the holiday hassle and is a great way to insure that you are giving unique presents. After hitting up a few of these sales year after year, our biggest shopping challenge is always resisting the urge to spend our gift budgets on ourselves.

The eighth annual Blue Genie Art Bazaar is accepting vendor applications through September 22nd. The yearly holiday sale, featuring art and gifts from regional artisans, opens on December 3rd and will run through Christmas eve at the Monarch Events Center. With free admission, late night hours, and a full bar, the Art Bazaar always manages to be one of the season's most enjoyable shopping experiences. Interested vendors can fill out an application online and those accepted will be notified by October 3rd. [Blue Genie Website]

One of our most favoritist of all Austin galleries, Blue Genie, is having their annual Art Bazaar (five years running). If you have never been to any of the Blue Genie events, then you have been missing out on one of the truly unique elements that make up the eccentric personality of Austin. With portraits like those of Felice House, kickasstastic belt buckles from Mark Joiner, porno latch-hookings (NSFW, we suppose, but whatever) from...
