Free Week rolls on tonight at The Mohawk with one of the strongest lineups of the week, as seven top-notch local bands are prepared to take over both of the Mohawk’s stages and square off against 20-degree temperatures. The forecast surely won’t discourage bravehearted music fans, and on the plus side, will likely serve as a great reminder as to exactly why brown liquor was invented.

Brazos’ debut LPs has been in the works for a while now. It’s been two years since principal member Martin Crane released the first EPs to fly the Brazos banner, A City Just as Tall and Feeding Frenzy, which he wrote and recorded entirely on his own. The fact that those EPs were essentially bedroom recording projects, coupled with the two year absence of any new material during which Crane assembled a (mostly) steady lineup for the band, may account for why Phosphorescent Blues is such a compelling departure from the original Brazos recordings. The album is beautifully recorded, and filled, for lack of a better phrase, with a kind of joyful nostalgia—both for the past and the future, if that’s even possible. more ›

It’s no secret that we’ve been fans of White Denim for a long time. And for good reason. The band has churned out a handful of excellent records, and on stage, the trio of James Petralli, Steve Terebecki, and Josh Block exhibit an instinctive chemistry, combining effortlessly to execute their calculated sonic experiments. Although the new record Fits dropped in the U.K. this past June (read our review here), it finally saw an official release in the U.S. earlier this week and the boys will mark this momentous occasion at The Mohawk on Saturday night with a typically robust performance, no doubt. more ›

We've been keeping you in the loop about KLRU's new program, ACL Stage Left, and for those of you who missed the RSVP for Leatherbag and Brazos, we've got a treat. Check out Leatherbag performing "On Down the Line" (above) and follow the jump to see Martin Crane from Brazos doing a moving rendition of "Mary Jo". We can't wait to see who is on the bill next. more ›

KLRU created the Austin City Limits Stage Left Program as a means to capture moments and stories of the “very best, most unique, passionate music artists” in order to create life-long fans. That seems like a pretty good goal to us so we’re pleased to announce an upcoming event for KLRU -- a free ACL show and taping of the rock band Brazos. It’s all going down this Friday at KLRU’s Studio 6A. more ›

>Local label Autobus records, who grabbed our attention this year with quite a few impressive releases, have announced their official SXSW Showcase for Wednesday, March 18th at the Hideout on 6th and Congress. While usually a venue for improv comedy and that sort of thing, the Hideout is surprisingly adaptable to live music, as attendees of the 2006 Orange Twin showcase (or subsequent SXSW showcases) can attest. more ›

There's not a lack of things to do tonight in Austin, but we'd be remiss to overlook our local darlings in Shearwater. After a busy 2008 touring the U.S. and abroad to support their latest Matador release, Rook (along with a jaunt opening for Coldplay), the ornithologically-obsessed Meiburg & Co. perch (sorry, couldn't help it) on the outside stage tonight at the Mohawk. more ›

Pastiche: House Shows

Between the house party and the club show lies the nebulous House Show, a tricky hybrid that attempts to straddle the world of booking, touring, sound checks and bartenders with your average party, the kind punctuated by loud talk, dark rooms, and limited toilets. At face value, a house show really just requires two things: a band or musician willing to play, and house to host him or her. Even electricity isn't a given, as many acoustic-based, un-miked shows have flourished in Austin living rooms, to be sure more ›

It's always a sad thing when an old friend stops hanging out. And that's the sentiment sure to be held this Thursday night as Brazos, one of Austin's most solid acts the past few years, hangs up their skins and axes for good. But let's not be too sad for them—the reason for their untimely departure from the Austin scene is that the drummer got into Harvard. Harvard! But really, their nearly flawless approach to pop-folk-rock (the band has existed for only a few years, but they play together like seasoned veterans) will be missed. But don't lose too much sleep—though the drummer will be departing for cooler climes, the rest of the band is sticking around, and new homes surely will be found for the tunes the remaining members write. more ›

The ol’ Compound next to Scoot Inn on the east side is throwing a party, and you’re invited! How about that! Also invited: three awesome bands for your listening pleasure. There’s a cover of just three measly bucks, and it’s B.Y.O.B. If you’re looking to kick-start your weekend with good tunes, look no further, but make sure to save some of your hearing for Saturday night’s Black Lips/White Denim show, for sure. more ›
