Local post-rock connoisseurs My Education bring expansive walls of sound to the comforts of Emo’s Lounge this Saturday. The band expertly constructs stirring atmospheric rock, patiently adding appropriate layers and a textured ambiance to their cinematic compositions via a plethora of instruments including the pedal steel guitar, piano, violin, and vibraphone. Fittingly, My Education have performed at the Alamo Drafthouse in the past, scoring films ranging from (Mamoru Oshii’s) Angel’s Egg to (F.W. Warnau’s) Sunrise, a true testament to their talent. The Dead Science headline with spastic spurts of experimental rock that seem disjointed on first listen but are impressively coherent when you indulge the somewhat eerie concoctions. The diverse instrumentation and the varying standards create quite the avant-garde ruckus; it should all make for a raucous live show. The Seattle band released their third full-length Villainaire earlier this year. more ›

Back in August of 2007, we found a hot real estate listing for Emo's Lounge, and today we have a resolution. Our friends at the Statesman are reporting that Emo's Lounge will soon be the home of El Sol y La Luna, a popular SoCo restaurant. more ›

hris Rose, aka Car Stereo (Wars), has kept himself quite busy since releasing his debut full-length The Bandit, a busty, limber little album full of Rose's mash-ups. Between numerous sets at Beauty Bar, Fun Fun Fun Fest last year, and a Mashup of some of ACL 2008's big name artists, he's managed to put together a special treat (with local flair) for Austin City Limits weekend. more ›

101X presents the latest installment of its Homegrown Live series this Wednesday at Emo’s Lounge. The Frontier Brothers will release their debut full-length Space Punk Starlet in October and some of that new material is sure to be previewed live in concert this evening. Ashley Pryble on French horn, Iram Reyes on trumpet, and Curtis Rouch on bass will join the usual band members Brett Moses, Marshall Galactic, and Travis Newman on stage for this special performance, and in their own words -- “we are going to sound B I G.” (Per The Frontier Brothers’ blog.) The jovial, space leotard wearing trio was featured in the June issue of SPIN magazine and they also caught the attention of MTV during SXSW this year. more ›

The sugary sweet pop harmonies of Calamity Magnet permeate Emo’s Lounge this Monday with support from local outfits Built By Snow, Hollywood Gossip, and Household Names. A former member of The Rentals and native Texan, Sara Radle heads up the L.A. based Calamity Magnet; the band released their first EP in March of this year. It’s worth noting that Radle was still a part of The Rentals up until last month when the allure of full time duties with Calamity Magnet dragged her away. You can stream an a capella version of The Rentals classic “Getting By” on her solo MySpace page -- she calls it her goodbye to the band but warns that it’s only a demo! more ›

A true legend will grace our town with his presence this evening when Andy Rourke (The Smiths) takes over the DJ booth at Emo's Lounge. We caught up with Rourke briefly yesterday over the phone prior to his DJ set in Hollywood and quizzed him on a number of things, including what we might expect to hear tonight. Rourke, who's been DJing for over five years now and also has a show on XFM Manchester, promises "a bit of everything" -- Rolling Stones, Devo, The Clash, New Young Pony Club, The Who, and Arctic Monkeys to name just a few. He also had some words of praise for the MGMT singles, specifically "Electric Feel" and "Time To Pretend" -- although "the album was a little bit of a letdown." He believes that the Arctic Monkeys are one U.K. act that could have the longevity that The Smiths have enjoyed. ("They seem to get better with age.") And what of Johnny Marr’s decision to join Modest Mouse in 2006? Rourke thinks that Modest Mouse was lacking an edge and that Marr really brought a lot to the table and colored their sound. Reflecting on a show he attended a few years ago, he said, "I was amazed by how many young kids were there." more ›

On the off chance that Jesus Lizard jazz and R&B; songs about sucking toes aren’t your thing, Emo’s Lounge has the rock-oriented antidote. Our own Oh No! Oh My! might be the biggest draw, what with their jovial, hummable tracks and cutesy name that demands to be said out loud, loudly. The band are promising a summer EP, which should jive swimmingly with their sun-loving sound, and an LP is also supposedly in the works. Hey, maybe these guys have a harder edge than we thought…their merch is too tough for Six Flags, anyway. more ›

Whatcha doin’ Saturday night? You could punish your eardrums with bands like Doom Siren and Disempower at the Broken Neck, enjoy the Scoot Inn’s Coney Island Fest (which, with any luck, will serve up those delicious mid-west morsels they call coney dogs), or you could step into a Valium haze with those country-echo pioneers The Cowboy Junkies at The One World Theater. But to experience some raw rock’n’roll, you might be better off treading down to Emo’s Lounge, where the only thing to separate you from the noise is that weird split level moat-thing. more ›

It seems like just yesterday we were honoring The Midgetmen’s five year anniversary. Well, turns out it has been a year already and this weekend at Emo’s Lounge, the local pop-punk act is celebrating its sixth birthday which conveniently coincides with the release of their third full-length album. The band’s new record Show Pony (Buy it here) is as eco-friendly as it gets -- per bassist / vocalist Marc Perlman, “100% post-consumer cardboard with environmentally friendly inks with no plastic shrink wrap. And, we just signed an agreement with our friends at MoveNeutral.com to carbon offset the CD release show as well as the entire tour!” Nice! more ›
