In the late sixties, Lee "Scratch" Perry (born Rainford Hugh Perry) was one of the artists whose experimentation and innovations eventually led to the creation of reggae and dub, two genres that defined the sound of Jamaica and continue to inspire both genuine devotees and rank imitators forty years later.

We know, we know. It's been a rough week and Friday just can't come soon enough. And tonight, it's time to sip some drank and just "loosen up." Well, why not discover some tasty new music in the process? Too lazy to find something original on your own? Don't worry, we've managed to find a band you may not have heard of but should definitely lend your ears to. Fatback Circus is a four-piece menagerie of rock, jazz, funk and spunk birthed from the sleepy town of Stillwater, Oklahoma.

Several Austin establishments have announced alternate hours or complete shut-downs this weekend, due to the Texas Relays. No specific or unified reason has been offered, but all the entities have mentioned safety concerns, poor revenue in past years, and post-SXSW blues.

Legendary rapper and co-founder of Boogie Down Productions KRS-One has canceled his show originally scheduled for this Friday, Dec. 5 at Flamingo Cantina. Saturday's show with Houston's Dope E (South Park Coalition) will go on as planned. Tickets to that show are $5.

Thursday Flamingo Cantina takes a break from bringing in bands like The Skatalites and Israel Vibration. Instead, for this free day show they will host the shimmering and sentimental, Swedish alt rock of the Shout Out Louds. You’ll also hear the catchy California rock of Rogue Wave and the love song sing-alongs and quirky experiments of Akron/Family. Sub Pop’s Portland drums-and-guitar duo The Helio Sequence come prepared with spacey indie rock prettiness, and Fleet Foxes are set to impress with charming guitars and melodic tones. Expect a thrilling display from Athens’ psych-folk collective Elf Power.

On Sunday night - before my sinuses joined the writer's strike - I fancied myself a Rockwell-ian protagonist. In my crappy efficiency apartment, I laid leisurely in an armchair, reading Yeats and watching Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. I also made laborious use of the first-person singular and listened to a new Bavu Blakes song, which arrived in my inbox that night.

The holiday season can slow things down in town but it cannot keep you from yearning for some good, live music and busting out your new, Santa provided wardrobe. If you have not had your mistletoe and Kringle fix, Emo’s steps in with a Christmas special (literally) on Friday. Christmas Special (featuring members of Voxtrot) provide Holiday cheer and Christmas carols with support from The Black and Red Leaves.

Welcome to the latest edition of Band Slam!, wherein I navigate the murky waters of Austin's club listings for the best and worst band names playing this week. The only rule: I can't know anything about the actual band, thus limiting my critique strictly to the band's chosen moniker. Cum on, feel the noise! Comanche Abortion - Snake Eyes Vinyl, 08/09 Oof. Who knows what kind of nightmare gave birth to this one (yuk...

My name is Tony Pierce, I'm the Editor of LAist, here in your fine town for SXSW. This is my third year doing the 9-day marathon of Interactive, Film, and Rock and I've gotta say that this is the best week-and-a-half that I get to spend each year. Although no one argues that Austin is the live music capital of the world, LA has been known to be home of some pretty decent bands,...
