Attendees who caught the California band Crystal Antlers at Fun Fun Fun Fest this year were privy to something weird and special. Loud but comforting, the band's engaging set was one of the weekend's most wacked-out.

Local garage rock trio Harlem are prepping their April 6 release of Hippies on Matador Records. The opened for Jay Reatard Wednesday night and will play again with Crystal Castles at the Mohawk on December 17. This week, Matador made the first single available for download: "Friendly Ghost" (mp3). Stay tuned for news on a pre-album 7", tour dates, and much more.

Putting on good rock shows is something this town does really well and something Austinites shouldn’t take for granted, but rather take advantage of. That being said, it’s a relative certainty that the show Wednesday at Emo’s with Jay Reatard (aka Jay Lindsey), Harlem and Shanghai River will be a packed one nearing sell out capacity, if not meeting it. Reatard has spent his musical career playing in garage and synth punk bands in Memphis and had built up quite a rep through his days in The Reatards, Lost Sounds and The Final Solutions, to name a few, that by the time he released Blood Visions, his debut solo disc, he grabbed the ears of your atypical garage rock fans as well as a label or two. His second studio album, Watch Me Fall, was released this year on Matador Records and widened his audience even more, while hopefully minimizing the loss of those puritan fans who might make a remark like, “Well, I liked his older stuff.”

The local boys in Harlem have been helping Austinites relearn how to dance to rock and roll with their catchy garage pop since their arrival on the scene not too long before their first record, Free Drugs, dropped last year. So, it wasn’t a big surprise when Matador Records made things official with the band in a marriage that means a multi-record, worldwide deal. We grabbed Harlem bassist, Jose Boyer, before their Fun Fun Fun Fest performance this weekend to get a quick word on their next album, playing house parties, girls and drugs.

Austinites sure are going to be spoilt for choice this weekend. If ten plus hours a day of live music on eight stages at Zilker Park isn’t enough, we get to pick from a plethora of mouth-watering late night gigs to satisfy our yearning ears. And since this turbulent economy has everyone pinching pennies, we’re offering our readers a chance to win tickets to two choice aftershows in town this Friday.

The Deli is sharing a new video for "Hometown Fantasy" from local minimalist darlings the Wooden Birds.

Happy birthday, Austinist photographer and notable Austinite Aasim Syed! No longer content with a round of birthday drinks or a nice dinner at Bagpipes, Mr. Syed is instead having his own mini-festival at the Mohawk this Saturday.

Last night, Rare Magazine celebrated at the Long Center with local bands, food and beverages from local vendors, and fireworks. Harlem, White Denim and Grupo Fantasma were on hand, as well as DJ Manny. All photos courtesy Pooneh Ghana.

It's official: Chaos in Tejas is upon us. The week's festivities kicked off last night at Red 7 with Ponytail, Harlem, Teenage Cool Kids and Yellow Fever. Austinist contributing photographer Pooneh Ghana was there to capture it all. Tonight we're looking forward to Trash Talk and Propogandhi at the Mohawk and much more: stay tuned for more photos from the events.

Molly Siegel’s mouth is the motor driving it all: there is yelping, some shrieking. There will be warbling. The effect is that of a punchy, anthemic stadium rock from outer space.

The Integrated Media Community, a "collective group of Austin-based film, music, interactive and arts professionals working to create a sustainable media economy in Austin, Texas," is throwing their second annual ATX Emerge party, which combine the talents of local filmmakers, artists and musicians. Tomorrow evening's party at the Mohawk features Belaire, Brazos, Foot Patrol, Freshmillions, Harlem, Sunset, The White White Lights, Ume, Zeale, and DJ Blissom. They'll also have a media room set up where you can see new video game and film work being presented. The event is free, but an RSVP (see box) is required.

The jangling, bustling and clashing of energetic, lo-fi rough cut rockers Harlem will be heard during this year’s SXSW. They’ve recently released their debut recording, Free Drugs, and the group has been buzzing around town and building a steady fan base by playing out regularly.

We're proud to present Tapes 'n Tapes at the Parish on January 29, supported by Harlem and Wild Light. Their latest album, Walk It Off, takes the band emphatically beyond 2006's debut, The Loon with haunting keys, gritty guitars and lots of pop energy. The Parish should be the ideal place to see them play, its casual intimacy and excellent sound will undoubtedly suit them well.

Free Week rolls on at Emo’s cozy inside area this Thursday with two of Austin’s most promising bands. Ume made many a new fan with its six-string powered assault early on day two at Fun Fest 2008. Singer and guitarist Lauren Larson is as much a rock goddess on stage as she is a sweet lass off it, and the rhythm section, comprised of Larson’s husband Eric on bass and Jeff Barrera on drums, more than holds its own, sustaining the band’s finely crafted rock explosions impeccably. We’re anticipating a landmark year for the trio in 2009.

Free Week at the Mohawk is featuring both the outside and inside stages will be packed with an army of bands. From psychedelic rock to turntabalism, the Mohawk should have you covered, and less money at the door means more for booze!

Harlem and Bridez opened for Gravytrain at the Mohawk Saturday night, and Austinist contributing photographer Nash Cook was there to capture it.

Beerland, known for music, old school video games, and, um, beer, will host a kind and compact cluster of five bands this Friday night, with all five bands making names for themselves within the confines of our fine city. Headlining will be The Diagonals, a subtle and scratchy outfit that, despite their somewhat workmanlike stylings while on stage, carries an innate danceability. Beyond that, Diagonals vocalist Steve Garcia, in some of his more speed-speak moments, has been compared to a young Michael Stipe...you know, before Michael Stipe had that whole fifteen years of boredom thing.

Spoon (6:30pm): So here's the thing about Spoon: they're a studio band. And on record, they're pretty much bulletproof for this decade. But the band also have a deserved reputation as a sometimes shaky live act, and such was the case for the show's beginning today. Britt Daniel and the band emerged without opening music or much ceremony, plowing right into a half-dozen tracks from new album Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga. But they...

Tapes 'n Tapes are quite possibly the best thing to come out Minneapolis' music scene since Prince and Hüsker Dü. Since forming in 2003, the band has trekked across vast and distant lands with a who's who of indie rock luminaries such as The Shins, Joanna Newsom, The Wrens and Spoon. After a few adjustments in the lineup, the band recorded its debut album, The Loon, in summer 2005 to glowing reviews and a...

In a little over a week, we're heading up to New York City for CMJ, South by Southwest Music's almost-as-hip cousin. We're skipping most of the official stuff, but we'll be throwing an afterparty in Brooklyn on the day after Halloween—right smack on Día de los Muertos.

WIN AN OPENING SPOT AT CMJ!

Awesome Inc. -- made up of folks from Austinist, Super!Alright!, Car Stereo (Wars), Learning Secrets, Finger on the Pulse (NYC) and more -- have teamed up with imeem to throw a massive Dia De Los Muertos party during CMJ in New York City. We've already booked a handful of great acts; now, we're looking for an excellent up-and-coming act to open. Submit audio or video tracks that best represent your group's musical skills – the band that gets rated the highest by the imeem community will play the show, opening for:
http://awesomeinc.imeem.com Thunderbirds are Now!
Make History, Detroit band Thunderbirds are Now!'s 3rd full-length and second on Frenchkiss Records, does away with a band in full tail-chase and depicts one at it's peak: no longer stressing about what people might expect, but rather wearing their influences better than one of Interpol's tailored suits.
http://awesomeinc.imeem.com Lo Fi Fnk (first US appearance!)
Lo-Fi-Fnk's music is an unlikely mix of innocence and maturity - 'Boylife' is fundamentally about growing up and moving on, tearing things down, new experiences, confusion gaining knowledge, realisations, breaking free, and of course…partying. To music that makes you wanna…damn….DANCE.
http://awesomeinc.imeem.com The Harlem Shakes
Bouncy Broolynites Harlem Shakes' long-waited ep, Burning Birthdays, mashes new-school sunshine pop against damaged indie doo-wop, pounding the result into anthemic, Yeah Yeah Yeah-style rock. Singer Lexy Benaim lisps with dark, boyish glee as alternately cutting and rolling guitar lines cascade over long ooohs and ahhhs, bright synth patterns, and the occasional sax (there's even a flute in there somewhere).
http://awesomeinc.imeem.com James Friedman
…when we heard about a DJ who goes around calling himself James F!@$%^ Friedman, he got extra points in our little black cred book. And when we discovered that he spins bands that we love, he got his own f!@$%^ page….Go Commando! features floor-friendly mixes from Annie, Bloc Party, the Rapture and a bunch of obscure people with ridiculous names. — Pitchfork
http://awesomeinc.imeem.com CSS
São Paulo, Brazil's provocative, freewheeling dance-rock sextet CSS takes its name from an abbreviation of "cansei de ser sexy," which is Portuguese for "tired of being sexy" (though, considering that the lead singer goes by the name Lovefoxxx, it's arguable how much that phrase actually applies to the band).

RSVP for the party at our meem on imeem or by emailing [email protected]

This past June, American portrait photographer Arnold Newman passed away in his birthplace of New York City at the age of 88. Four months later, his acclaimed portrait photographs have found a permanent home, where they will share a room with the first-ever photograph and The Gutenberg Bible, at The University of Texas' Harry Ransom Humantities Research Center.

Some things skip a generation. Others round the bend, never to be heard from again. Still others seem to hop in and out of mode with consistent regularity. While some fads and fashions may fall out of style, one that seems to breath new life into the dance scene at regular intervals is the original Lindy Hop. This highly improvisational and interpretive dance style was born in Harlem during the Jazz Age. The same...

"At the end of touring on a record, you're just so sick of all your songs, and you don't have any prospects for new ones, so it feels like you're in limbo. Even though that's when all your success comes, for us it's like ... old news, and we just wanted to move on and get started on something else..."

New York City indie rockers The Walkmen made it big with 2004's Bows and Arrows, an aggressive, exuberant, and borderline-theatrical production that ended up on tons of year-end "best of" lists. Over the past two years, the guys have gone through some big changes: the Harlem building housing their personal recording studio, dubbed Marcata (where B&A; was born), was bought out by Columbia University, in the school's ever-accelerating expansion north of Morningside Heights. After...
