Yes, it’s still Free Week, and it’s still freaking cold out there! Drown your Longhorn-related sorrows at the Mohawk tonight, as a whole mess of local bands once again swarm the venue’s indoor and outdoor stages. As before, the lineups on each stage are loosely connected by genre—inside tonight we’re greeted with four groups taking vastly different approaches to playing music in the Americana tradition. Let’s start with Headdress, an Austin band that may have escaped your attention despite a pair of excellent releases on the Mexican Summer and No Quarter labels. As only a guitar/organ duo that describes its members as “part heshers, part American nomads” could, Headdress crafts austere, long-form psychedelic blues drone pieces that feel much larger than the sum of their component parts. more ›

The Lemurs have been writing good songs, drawing bigger crowds and getting better and better since their beginnings in 2004. Here in Austin, their shows are consistent safe bets: the group maintains an electric energy that remains unrivaled by most other local acts. Since their self-titled EP in 2006, the band have played out, supporting the likes of Stars outdoors at Stubb's, Britt Daniel, the Long Winters and Do Make Say Think. Renowned for excellent sound quality and a feeling of coziness that belies its substantial size, The Parish Room has been Sixth Street's favorite little concert hall for quite a while now, and this Friday they'll be hosting yet another quality show: four of Austin's most interesting and diverse pop acts. Headlining is the clap-happy and catchy Built by Snow, a band who often channel an updated version of cultural phenomenon Weezer in their tunes--they will soon be heading into the studio to record their second CD, and this show is sure to provide some pleasant previews of the new material. more ›
