Everyone knows Waterloo Records as a great independent record store, but the list of musicians performing in-store shows is proof that Waterloo is also a great music venue. In just the last year, bands appearing on Waterloo's stage include Andrew Bird, Rosanne Cash, Daniel Johnston, Los Lonely Boys, Lykke Li, Paolo Nutini, and Wolfmother. Adding to the experience, these shows are always free and most always supply free beer. Here is our photographic proof of Waterloo's live music greatness.

Snapshots: Phoenix @ La Zona Rosa

In addition to their invaluable assistance in the Revolutionary War and perennially tasty cuisine France has bestowed us with the gift of Phoenix. The Parisian pop confections served up last night at La Zona Rosa were nothing less than superb examples of rock done right.

It helps to take a vacation every once in a while, to change your perspective and experience new things. When Metric got home from their disparate musical journeys they obviously had some new perspectives, and set about unleashing them on their new album Fantasies.

We're still coming down from our East Austin Studio Tour high - with four days of visiting studios and a week full of happenings and performances, this was undoubtedly our favorite EAST to date. As always, we were struck by the sheer number of artists and creatives working out of the East Side and were blown away by the diversity of the work. In a few short days we were able to model hand crafted hats, letterpress our own cards, screenprint a tee-shirt, see work by some amazing artists, buy locally handmade gifts, and generally feel inspired and proud to be surrounded by a community that values creativity. As artist Stephanie Nance encouraged in her blog, "don't let the East Side of I-35 scare you! It's full of wonderful art, culture, and diversity and it's waiting for you... get your bikes or good waking shoes out and be a tourist!" We're sure glad we did.

Snapshots: Fun Fun Fun Sunday

This year's Fun Fest was a huge success. We were just as happy to spend Sunday in the mud as we were to indulge in Saturday's spring-like sunshine. Between 90 bands, four stages and thousands of music lovers, Fun Fest proved itself to be one of the most important Austin events of the year. Each year's festival has enjoyed sizable growth without losing the intimate feel its become known for; and the good-natured volunteers, bartenders, security folks and box office staff all make that possible -- even remarkable. Oh yeah - there were nearly 100 bands, comedians and DJs to watch this year, and they all seemed to feed off the audience's palpable devotion, offering 100% one each stage all weekend long, regardless of weather. We can't wait for next year, when we'll undoubtedly see Transmission Entertainment and everyone involved in the fest proving themselves worthy of one more ladder step. Thanks to all of you who worked with us in the media lounge and box office over the weekend - we look forward to seeing you again next year!

There's a bit of rain, but folks are still catching their favorite acts at Zilker Park.

From Friday at midnight to Saturday at midnight, they came, they saw, they constructed, and then they conquered. Led by artist Liz Glynn, a team of volunteers recreated the rise and fall of Rome in cardboard and reused building materials in the cleared out gallery space at the Arthouse. At the end of the one day feat, the participants took on the role of invading Visigoths and trampled the city to the ground.
