You could be forgiven for thinking that a sitcom actress who pockets thirteen million dollars a season for Will and Grace might indulge herself with any kind of vanity project including hiring a band and the Vaudeville Theatre for a debut week in the West End. But this isn’t a vanity, Mullally has worked with her backing group ‘Supreme Music Program‘ for twelve years and her range of vocal styles is extraordinary: from blues to country and Sondheim to Stones she nailed song after song with a deft and personal attack, attack being the operative word when her rock voice reaches a controlled screech in a trailer-trash banger like ‘Fancy’ by Reba McEntyre or Ryan Adams’ ‘Shakedown on 9th Street’, but tender and connected in perhaps her best piece, Randy Newman’s luminous ‘Real Emotional Girl’. more ›

Invited along by the kids from Le Cool for a Wednesday evening of mingling and nibbling, Londonist was pleased to finally get round to trying out the “stylish and affordable East Asian cuisine” restaurant, Monsieur M. We found Monsieur's menu (which changes daily) to be tasty and, indeed, well priced. For the time being, Monsieur M. is offering a lunchtime “main meal” special for £5.60 or “lunch for a tenner” with a main, side dish and any drink. more ›

You can be forgiven if you missed Pete and the Pirates first time round. The likeable five-piece's debut album came out during the guitar band glut of 2008, when separating the landfill indie from the good stuff was a Herculean task. We won't hold it against you if you didn't bother trying. Still, if you haven't run into these cheerful chaps before, that's all the more reason to check them out at The Windmill, Brixton on 12 March. more ›

Pump Up The Protest

drinks.jpg In an unusual reversal of normality, The Ministry of Sound has started a campaign against the construction of a residential development nearby. In what could be described as taking the proactive approach, the club is objecting based on fears that if future residents complain about noise, it might be forced to close. It's not the first time the Ministry have grasped the initiative firmly with both hands - earlier this year they allowed clubbers carrying condoms to jump the queue (not in THAT sense) as part of an NHS campaign to raise awareness of safe sex.

Not got quite enough to talk to your mates about but still want to go to the pub? Fancy showing off your ability to contain meaningless facts, or simply like to write with a biro in front of people? The solution to all of this is the mighty pub quiz, and London sure is full of them. Every nook and cranny, every day of the week, you'll be able to find a quiz somewhere or other. It's our aim to test out as many as possible and let you know if they're good enough to race to after work to save a table.  more ›

Tonight: Brockley Central drew our attention to a gathering in the Golden Lion Pub on Sydenham High Street tonight where Tim Lund, Chair of the Sydenham Society (not for much longer) will be talking about "Doing Civics in the 21st Century". There are so many goodies on offer at Jewish Book Week, we're having difficulty knowing where to begin. So, rather than damage this monitor by sticking a pin in it, we'll start at the beginning (it's a very good place to start). more ›

West Ham To Olympic Stadium: Minister Says 'No'

1802_stadium.jpg The Hammers' hopes of planting themselves in the Olympic stadium post-2012 have receded after Olympic minister Tessa Jowell rubbished the idea. Speaking during her taxpayer-funded jolly fact-finding mission in Vancouver, Jowell insisted that the stadium would be used to host England's second most popular sport, which, as we all know, is track-and-field. West Ham's new owners want the club to relocate to the stadium after the Games are over, and have suggested that Upton Park could be converted to an athletics track in a convenient quid pro quo; but Jowell is incensed that the matter has been brought up at all, and seems determined to bestow the status of 'white elephant' upon the cupcake. Given that Jowell probably has, at best, three months left in the job, there may be hope for the Irons yet.

Preview: James Murphy DJ Set @ East Village

jamesmurphy0210.jpeg Shoreditch dance hotspot East Village tonight welcomes back LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy for a rare DJ set. Yes, it's a Thursday night, but if you can disguise your dark bags tomorrow morning then this is one night worth risking a hangover for. Hosted by Magic & Medicine, James last visited the night when launching LCD's Sounds of Silver album in 2007. This time round he promises a 'special disco version' style DJ set and perhaps glimpses of the new LCD album which will be fully shown off for the first time in London when the band play two sold out dates at Brixton Academy in April. Joining him on the decks are London's own Skull Juice and Dan from Disco Bloodbath. Doors are from 9.30 and tickets will set you back £11.
