Today the Times crunches the numbers on New Yorkers whose deaths are ruled accidental, noting that although there has been a significant drop in homicides and fire fatalities in recent years, there has not been a similar drop in death by oops. According to a recently released report [pdf], in 2008, 54,193 people died in NYC, and 1,044 deaths (excluding drug overdoses) were classified as accidental. It was an 8.8 percent decline from 1998, but homicides fell 17.5 percent in that same period. Why can't the government save us from accidents? more ›

An out-of-control fire at a Bensonhurst apartment building killed five, and caused a mother to throw two children out a window early this morning. "It was not a normal fire," said FDNY Deputy Assistant Chief John Sudnik. According to the Daily News the blaze, that firefighters battled for over three hours, started at a first-floor restaurant, though the exact cause is unknown. more ›

New York City's own Jasmina Anema, the 6-year-old who bravely fought her leukemia and got thousands to donate bone marrow, died last night at NYU's Langone Medical Center. She was admitted Monday after her mother noticed a fever and shortness of breath—at that point she was diagnosed with pneumonia and the Daily News reports her condition quickly deteriorated. more ›

A 35-year-old man was killed by a No. 5 train just before 10 a.m. this morning, according to City Room. The victim was pinned between the train and the tracks at Brooklyn's Atlantic Avenue station, where police say there was no evidence of foul play. EMS was called, and power was cut to the tracks but by the time the man could be transported to Brooklyn Hospital Center, he was already in grave condition. Doctors pronounced him dead on arrival. more ›

Today the trial began for a young volunteer firefighter suspected of setting fire to a building, causing four deaths. The 20-year-old from Long Island—who experts say started the fire so that he could be a "hero"—faces charges of arson and second-degree murder. But in court today, the defendant's lawyer argued that police investigated the wrong man. more ›

Jimmy Lee Lindsey, the Memphis-based indie punk musician who was better known as Jay Reatard, was found dead early this morning at his home. He was 29 years old. His record label, Goner Records, confirmed the death on their website. Matador Records wrote: "We are devastated by the death of Jimmy Lee Lindsey Jr., aka Jay Reatard. Jay was as full of life as anyone we've ever met, and responsible for so many memorable moments as a person and artist. We're honored to have known and worked with him, and we will miss him terribly." Reatard released many albums over the last decade with various bands, and four well-received solo albums, including last years "Watch Me Fall." Concert promoter Todd P twittered: "You were talented & troubled & both a great influence and a negative influence on a lot of people. you should not be dead." more ›

Last night at 10:30 word came in over the newswire of a jumper down at 1 Washington Square Village, across from Bobst Library. This morning the NY Post reports that the man who jumped from a 16th-floor balcony in the apartment building was 37-year-old NYU computer science professor, Sam Roweis. He just started at the university last year, and was described by others as "a very happy, happy guy." more ›

A special-education teacher who was one of the two joggers mowed down by a drugged Staten Island cover girl, died this morning. Daniel Kelley, who was just 23-years-old, fought for his life until early this morning, then succumbed to the head and chest injuries he sustained during the crash on Jan. 5. "The family is suffering so much right now," a neighbor told the Daily News. Meanwhile, the model is free on bail. more ›

Things aren't looking so good for the Medical Examiner's office. Back in 2002 a 27-year-old named Richard Massey disappeared in New York. According to the NY Post, the computer programmer had just moved here from England, reportedly started acting "bizarrely" and was taken to St. Vincent's Hospital. Allegedly, in prior weeks, he was scared someone was going to hurt him. He checked himself out of the hospital on December 19th, and was never seen again. more ›

The female cyclist who died on Delancey Street yesterday hit a pothole and fell behind a school bus, which then backed over her, NY1 reports. The victim was thrown from her bike near the corner of Ludlow Street at around 4:30 pm and happened to land directly behind the bus, according to a witness. more ›

Casey Johnson — socialite, Johnson & Johnson heiress, and daughter of NY Jets owner Woody Johnson — has died. TMZ reported the death of the 30 year old last night, saying that she "last tweeted on December 29th," and prior to that had been briefly staying with her fiance, Tila Tequila. The two were allegedly fighting last week, and when Johnson left Tila's house on the 29th, she left her dogs behind — Tila says was unable to get in touch with her afterwards. more ›

The body of a 15-year-old girl, who was mailing a letter, was found outside a Bronxville church on Wednesday morning. At this point, police suspect Mihoko Fukuzawa slipped and died of internal bleeding—Police Chief Christopher Satriale said, "We don't believe it was an attack"—but they are seeking a bicyclist seen in a surveillance video. more ›

Sad news from Sesame Street: actress Alaina Reed-Amini, known for her long-running role on the series as Olivia Robinson, has died after losing her battle with breast cancer. She was 63 years old and in Santa Monica at the time of her death. Reed-Amini joined the Sesame Street gang in 1976 (later you knew her as Rose Lee Holloway on 227) and stayed through 1988; on the show she played the kid sister of Gordon, and sung plenty of tunes... more ›

Following the death of 32-year-old actress Brittany Murphy, the LAPD is now investigating if drugs had anything to do with her cardiac arrest, saying the investigation is open until toxicology reports are available. Other noteworthy tidbits from the rags: in her final interview she admitted to being "too skinny;" she had a will leaving her estate to her mother; husband Simon Monjack is totally sketchy (the Post says "he's the dubious, debt-riddled dude widely known as 'Conjack'"!). Foul play isn't suspected, but TMZ has a frighteningly long list of prescription meds found on her nightstand, and a forensic pathologist told the Post, "I bet you that this young lady tragically died in the same way that Michael Jackson did, and Anna Nicole Smith, and her son, Daniel Smith, and Heath Ledger — a combination of drugs." more ›

Yesterday morning 32-year-old actress Brittany Murphy died after collapsing in the bathroom and suffering cardiac arrest in Los Angeles. The coroner official now says it "appears to be natural," and TMZ reports an autopsy will take place either today or tomorrow, despite her British screenwriter husband, Simon Monjack, objecting to one. more ›

Yesterday afternoon a British-born DJ residing in Brooklyn was struck and killed in Greenpoint while riding her bike to her day job at a florist. Colorful and controversial former Metropolitan Museum of Art director Thomas Hoving died in his Manhattan home yesterday of cancer; he was 78 years old. Hoving headed the museum between 1967 and 1977 and wrote in his memoir, Making the Mummies Dance that he had to be "a gifted connoisseur, a well-trained scholar, an aesthete, a patient diplomat, a deft fundraiser, an executive, and a conciliator" as well as “part gunslinger, ward heeler, legal fixer, accomplice smuggler, anarchist, and toady." more ›

The city's Administration for Child Services is looking into the death of an 11-month-old boy who passed away in Cypress Hills on Monday night. Police responded to a call of an infant having difficulty breathing at around 8:30 pm, but when they arrived, the baby was already being moved to Brookdale Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The child — whose name was Major Gonzalez, according to NY1 — had a bruise on his forehead. The station reports that the parents are being questioned, and further testing is required before investigators will be able to determine a cause of death. Today marks the 29th anniversary of John Lennon's death. The musician would have just turned 69 this October had Mark David Chapman not shot him dead outside of the Dakota on the night of December 8th, 1980. (Last year Chapman was denied parole for a 5th time.) Wife of Christo, and artist herself, Jeanne-Claude has died at age 74. She co-created the 2005 "Gates" installation, that spanned 23 miles in Central Park, alongside her husband (the installation brought $254 million to the local economy here). Mayor Bloomberg spoke with Christo this morning to offer condolences on the behalf of the city, where Jeanne-Claude died last night of a brain aneurysm. more ›

Yesterday afternoon it was reported that Ken Ober, best known as the host of MTV's Remote Control, died on Sunday at the age of 52. The cause of death hasn't been announced, but his agent has come out with some details, saying: "His body was discovered in his home. The last person to have spoken to him was on Saturday morning. No foul play is suspected, no suicide, it looks like natural causes, just no one knows the exact cause yet." more ›

Yesterday morning an amateur surfer died in the storm-fueled waves off the Rockaways. The NY Post reports that the 36-year-old male's leash became tangled to a jetty, where a wave had knocked him and his board — he then allegedly suffered a heart attack. Police say he was only a few feet off short when they found him at 9:25 a.m., and was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital. WCBS reports that surfers have been attracted to the waves Hurricane Ida is sending, but one said of the novice: "It wasn't the right day to practice for him." more ›
