I was so shocked by NYC as #1 BBQ destination - until I read that the survey was for "Best BBQ" AND "July 4th Celebrations." Which makes sense - I'd like to see where NYC ranks for BBQ alone. Maybe in the top 10, but not the top 5 places.

cheaptickets.com did the rankings not the memphis business journal. also this is probably the most meaningless ranking i have ever seen. NYC as opposed to st. louis, charleston, memphis et. al. for bbq? - hah.

Sorry - no way New York is better than Memphis or even Dallas. Until Dallas has a chain of "New York BBQs" serving terrible approximations of local cuisine throughout the city, I'm not swayed.

Fun fact: there are no "Dallas BBQs" in Dallas.

Seriously. New York has improved for BBQ by leaps and bounds over the last decade. Pretty much no chance it ever becomes a BBQ mecca though. The pollution and space restrictions (particularly in Manhattan) simply aren't conducive to BBQ smoking. Dinosaur, RUB, Blue Smoke, Daisy Mae's, the newcomers at Hill Country . . . they are good enough, and should be commended for overcoming some technical obstacles, but wouldn't be considered close to the best joint in many many southeastern cities.

But this ranking is meaningless because it combines July 4 activities with BBQ with no indication of how each is weighted. And NYC does have purty fireworks (and better BBQ than a lot of places with purty fireworks, like DC).
