Tonight, which should be a lovely night, marks the opening of Miller Outdoor Theatre's 2010 Season. Pack a picnic and some beverages (but, not too many, if they have some % of alcohol by volume) and a blanket to lounge on and take in the first show: Arlo Guthrie - The Guthrie Family Rides Again, beginning at 8:00 p.m. and free to the public. If you want to sit in the covered seating area, you will require a ticket, or tickets - those are available the day of the show at the Miller Theatre Box Office between 10:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. on a first come, first served basis (which we realize is not doing you any good today, but, hey, for future reference). Please be advised, you may only have 4 (four) tickets per person, just to keep it "fairsies" so one group doesn't hog the covered seats (no rain - use the ground). Five minutes (or at the management's discretion) prior to the show, any open seating will be released to the rest of the public, so, if you get tickets for a seat, plant your arse in it early, just in case. The Miller Outdoor Theatre is sporting 1,700 new covered seats, and a new sound system!

Tonight's performance will include Arlo (son of Woodie "Alice's Restaurant" and reknowned singer/songwriter) Guthrie, his son Abe and daughter's Cathy, Annie and Sara Lee. Johnny Irion, who is Sarah's husband will be playing guitar, as well. The littlest Guthrie's will be accompanying certain songs, as well (bringing in the third generation).

This past week, the Astros released their All-Decade team, highlighting their best players from 1999-2009. All the familiar names were present: Bagwell, Biggio, Berkman, Oswalt and Lidge all got their proper recognition. And while that’s all well and good, a hearty reminder of the glory days of the mid-Aughts, we figured that there’s also been enough mediocrity to spread around, too. more ›

For the week of March 22 - 24, 2010 We made it back from Austin intact, if a little worse for wear, and still completely in love with music. So we're happy to see some quality shows in town as the ghost of SXSW 2010 streams off into the ether. more ›

The gallery scene has settled down a bit from last weekend, but Houstonist knows you didn't go see everything you meant to. Openings (and closings) are still going to be around town, and with all the on-going shows, there's plenty to keep busy with. Rice Design Alliance has organized a self-guided tour of the city's Southgate neighborhood for those who want to stay out in the nice weather and get to know the city a little better. There's also the Houston Downtown Alliance's Dowtown Home Tour and more ›

Suchu Dance's Ella Paradise premieres tonight at Barnevelder Theater and will run for the next two weekends. Suchu's Artistic Director Jennifer Wood has been working with a team of eleven dancers to create the new piece, which, when viewed from the theater's elevated in-the-round seating, highlights the intricate pattern-weaving maneuvers of the performers on the floor. Though Suchu is a contemporary dance company, the show is dressed in old-fashioned charm, evoking a sense of familiarity and reminiscence in the audience through its costuming and music as it progresses through what feels like a choreographed daydream. more ›

For the weekend of March 18th - 21st, 2010 While we may be up in Austin this weekend, that doesn't mean we took the music with us. There's an avalanche of shows in good ol' H-town, so go see a few and help some of the touring bands make a buck or two. Life on the road is tough, folks. more ›

What a glorious day for some stout! Yeah, we know "Green Beer...blah, blah", you want green beer? Head to the nearest A&P; and buy food coloring, tote it to the bar with you. If the water in the toilet is a weird color after you unload a pint or two, it's the F,D & C "whatever" color, really. more ›
