This summer two college kids, Nick and Katharine, were challenged to go see 50 free concerts in 50 days throughout the city. This of course was made more difficult by the never-ending rainy season, but they managed to reach their goal. You can read about the entire experience on their blog. Sounds fun right? Even if it is a rip-off of 100 Bands in 100 Days. more ›

Ideally every good summer music festival is filled with one or two moments where everyone there can't help but shake off the cobwebs of cynicism and think to themselves, "Now this is what it's all about." It's pretty safe to say that Jay-Z did just that for a few thousand people last night at All Points West, performing the takeover just as the rain cleared to begin his first American festival appearance with a cover of "No Sleep Til Brooklyn." We admit to needing a video like the one below to do just that for those of us stuck listening to APW coverage on rock radio stations suddenly caring about Jay, accompanied by DJs using it as a chance to show off their emcee skills and explain the rapper's importance due to his collaborations with The Killers, Jack White and Linkin Park. Alas, Jigga to the rescue: more ›

Pool Parties Move to Waterfront

Yesterday afternoon the Pool Parties made their debut off the McCarren Pool grounds and on the Williamsburg waterfront, at East River State Park (Mission of Burma, Fucked Up, Ponytail and Jemina Pearl all played). This new home is even more temporary than the last—which is currently undergoing a $50 million makeover—only one summer of shows will be held here before it's time to find a new home. In the meantime, the crowds from yesterday were aTwitter with thoughts on the new space. Most of the reviews have been positive, and for the most part the same elements are there, with some slight changes. more ›

Welcome to last summer amNewYork! The McCarren Park Pool parties and concerts aren't happening anymore. There was this whole long, drawn out thing about it when the series ended to make way for a $50 million makeover, at the end of which it will be a pool again. There were meetings and debates about it and stuff. more ›

Saturday was the day the music died at McCarren Park Pool (well, not really), but one couldn't have asked for a better note to go out on than one provided by Sonic Youth ("Expressway to Yr Skull" was a perfect finale from the post-punk pioneers). The NY Times spoke to concertgoers and locals about the venue, which could return to its original function as soon as 2011. An elderly resident declared, “This music, very noisy. Swimming, O.K.” but one man noted, “I love this music. I come from Mexico, and in Mexico there is little music like that." And some businesses have enjoyed a 30% increase in sales on show days. The Times said hipsters claim they won't come back to swim because they think it'll be "too dirty" [insert dirty hipster joke here]. more ›

Who can keep up with all the changes surrounding McCarren Park Pool? One thing if for certain, it will one day contain water. The NY Post notes that the design, to be reviewed by the Landmarks Preservation Commission on September 9th, also "calls for a new U-shaped pool (about 70 percent of the current footprint), an ice-skating rink, a cafe, a community center and an exhibition center" and a performance space. That's right, it's very likely Sonic Youth won't be the last band to play there. The performances will be held during the "off-season," which is likely the Spring and Fall (leaving JellyNYC's free summer shows still searching for a new home). Stephanie Thayer of the Dept of Parks & Rec and Open Space Alliance (responsible for bringing shows to the pool in the first place) says, "It doesn't have to be an either/or. Hopefully we'll have shows at the pool." more ›

Julian Koster, member of the Elephant 6 Collective, former member of the legendary Neutral Milk Hotel and current leader of The Music Tapes, will be playing in Central Park tonight to his two stuffed animals. An acorn will be your ticket in, and there are plenty of other instructions that should keep you busy up until show time, which is 10:46 p.m. (not a moment sooner). This is a rain date for a previously scheduled show--read the original details here and updates here. Give a listen to Music Tapes album then head up to the mouth of the American Museum of Natural History. UPDATE: Looks like we received a bad tip and this show actually appears to have happened last year, our apologies! Looks like the rain would have stopped it anyway. A chaotic scene emerged outside last night's O.A.R. concert at Jones Beach where concertgoers "threw beer bottles, stood on car rooftops and tossed young women in the air." Newsday reports that at least twelve people in attendance were brought to the hospital with alcohol poisoning and police said that there were "massive amounts of underage drinking." Rowdy crowds are nothing new for concerts of O.A.R. (which stands for "of a revolution"). Last year 82 arrests were made outside the jam band's live show in Holmdel, New Jersey. more ›

Last week Miley Cyrus took GMA's Bryant Park stage, sans Hannah Montana wig, for an early morning concert. This morning she took her act over to The Today Show, while Feist owned the GMA crowd at Bryant Park. It wasn't a competition but...they did both bring their spirit fingers! And even though Miley is popular with the tweens, Feist is sure to win over the tots after her appearance on Sesame Street airs later this year. more ›

Although the proposed redesign to Governors Island won’t be finished until at least 2013, the island’s administrators are coming up with plenty of reasons to pay a visit today. Starting May 31st, the island, which has expansive parks, a full-circle bike path, former military bases and a spectacular view of Brooklyn and lower Manhattan, will be open on more days and for longer hours than ever before. And the calendar of concerts and events is said to be expanding. more ›

Perhaps in an effort to capitalize on some pending April Fools Day confusion, (or, less cynically, to honor the cozy club,) Norah Jones made a surprise appearance at the Living Room on Monday night. The Ludlow street lounge, which has been celebrating its 10-year anniversary with night after night of packed lineups with a sprinkling of some big names, is where the Queen of Mom Music got her start many years ago. more ›

With McCarren Park Pool soon becoming a place where one will hear children splashing in the water instead of hipsters sighing whilst listening to their new favorite band, the search is on for a new outdoor concert space. Of course, the venue simply wouldn't do unless it was in the mecca of indie rock, Williamsburg/Greenpoint. more ›

THEATER: System of Units, a performance group from Siberia, begin their site-specific collaboration with the local “interventionist performance group” TRYST outside today starting at 12:00pm, when the temperature will transcend 90°. So if you think it’s stinking hot, just wait ‘til you see how the Siberians hold up in this six-hour performance. Called Security Zone, the two groups will create "a mock construction site that plays with perceptions of labor and public space, expectations of daily interactions, and attitudes toward leisure and work.” (Part of the excellent Sitelines series.) - John Del Signore more ›

Brooklyn's Southpaw hosted a great evening of comedy on behalf of Concerts For Change Weds. night. Gothamist is crazy about Stella, the comedy trio comprised of Michael Ian Black (yeah, from Ed and I Love The Eighties),and the creators of Wet Hot American Summer, Michael Showalter and David Wain. It used to be that you could see these guys play tiny rooms like The Fez on an ongoing basis. Now their busy schedules don't have them getting around near as much, so we were really happy to get to see them perform. more ›

Well, the Siren Music Festival is over and we have to go back to actually paying for our live music--most of the time. The next week is filled with great shows, and a handfull of them are either free or require a very small donation. Gotta love NYC in the summer! more ›

Gothamist won't be at Southpaw later, as we totally flaked on getting tickets to Tinkle tonight. So if you're attending please let us know how awesome it was. more ›

When is the Philharmonic holding their annual park concerts? Shouldn't that be happening soon? more ›

I'm thinking about doing a little volunteer work for a theatre group this summer - do you have any suggestions? I have lots of experience both onstage and backstage, but am not particularly interested in pursuing it career-wise. Thanks for your help! more ›

Gothamist believes in supporting political causes you believe in, but what we believe in more strongly is not being pushy and annoying. We received this email from Concerts for Kerry:
