The Giants and the Jets will both play in their new stadium on opening week, though the G-Men will play first. After tense negotiations between the teams, Commissioner Roger Goodell flipped a coin and decided that the Giants will take the field first at the new Meadowlands Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 12, according to the Star Ledger. The following evening, the Jets will play the season's first "Monday Night Football" game in the stadium. The Giants wanted the first game because the Jets had the final regular season game at the old stadium, and the Jets wanted it because they felt like "second-class citizens in Giants Stadium," the Post reports. During his first interview since being sentenced to two years in prison for shooting himself in the leg with an unlicensed handgun, the wide receiver stated: "Being in here I have time to think about how I want to be seen when I get out. The Department of Correctional Services has turned down former Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress' request to take part in a work release program that would have allowed him to spend some nights at home, according to 1010WINS. Burress — who was sentenced to two-years in prison after shooting himself in the leg in a Manhattan nightclub — asked for the furlough just two months into his sentence. more ›

Hours after co-owner, John Mara, said the season felt like “2-14” and said he was “disappointed in everything” the Giants made their first move of the offseason firing defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan. Sheridan’s tenure was troubled from the start with Osi Umenyiora leaving training camp over a disagreement with the coach and players asking him to remain on the sidelines instead of coaching from the booth as he wanted to. His defense gave up 427 points, third worst in the league and the most points surrendered by the team since 1966. Jets 37 Cincinnati 0: On a cold and windy night at the Meadowlands, the Jets did exactly what they needed to do, thrashing the Bengals and earning a playoff spot. New York took the opening kickoff and marched down the field for a touchdown with Thomas Jones plunging in for a touchdown. After forcing the Bengals to go three and out, the Jets added a field goal to go up 10-0. Brad Smith had a 32-yard touchdown run to make it 17-0 and Jerricho Cotchery hauled in a touchdown pass from Mark Sanchez to make it 24-0. The Bengals turned the ball over to the Jets in the waning seconds of the first half and New York added a field goal to go up 27-0 at the half. more ›

Start with the defense, Bill Sheridan has to go. His defense has allowed 383 points, fifth worst in the entire NFL. But sacrificing Sheridan is not enough; a lot of the defensive players need to follow him out the door. Rocky Bernard and Chris Canty were brought in to bolster the defensive line and did nothing so cut them. Moving to linebacker, Antonio Pierce may be a great leader, but he also really slowed down this year, add him along with Chase Blackburn and Gerris Wilkinson to the discard pile. As bad as the secondary has been, just getting some guys back healthy would be a big improvement. But, C.C. Brown, Kevin Dockery and Aaron Rouse all need to go. more ›

• Giants 45, Redskins 12: This game ended when the Giants took the kickoff and went on a 16-play scoring drive that took nine minutes and 13 seconds. They needed a win, and they got one by playing like they did at the beginning of the season, which, coincidentally, is when they played the easy part of their schedule. Eli Manning threw for three scores, and Ahmad Bradshaw rushed for two more -- the first two of the game. The Giants still trail the Cowboys and Packers for the wild-card playoff berths in the NFC, but they have a decent shot at catching them. New York finishes against Carolina at home and then at Minnesota. It needs two wins and help, but it could get all three.

They had more turnovers, allowed Dallas to pass for almost 400 yards and only held the ball for 21 minutes. But, none of it matters because they won and they have put some life back into their playoff hopes.

It’s do-or-die time for the Giants. They are 6-5, losers of five-of-six and a loss on Sunday would effectively finish their season. But, a win on Sunday would catapult them back into contention. Despite their atrocious play, the Giants have been losing games to non-division teams. If they beat the Cowboys on Sunday, they will be only one game behind them and they will hold the tiebreaker. If they follow that up with a win the next weekend over Philly, they will hold at least a share of second place in the NFC East. more ›

For those that thought the Giants' overtime win over the Falcons last week spelled a turn around, think again. New York gave up the first 16 and final 10 points in a 26-6 loss to Denver on Thanksgiving night. That drops the Giants to 6-5 and puts them in a world of hurt in the NFC East. The Giants, who snapped a four-game losing streak of their own Sunday, helped the Broncos break theirs. Denver held the Giants to 57 yards rushing and sacked Eli Manning three times. Big Blue's quarterback needed 40 attempts to accumulate 230 yards and an interception. more ›

The Giants stayed out of the abyss this past Sunday. Losers of four-straight, they blew a 14-point fourth quarter lead, but managed to prevail in overtime to keep their season moving. Now, they have to go on the road in a short week and beat a Denver team that has its own problems. Denver started out 6-0 on the season and has lost four games in a row to date. Giants legend Lawrence Taylor was arrested in Hialeah, Florida yesterday for leaving the scene of an accident where he allegedly hit a car and then a guard rail. TMZ wants to assure us that he wasn't under the influence—police say he "was so coherent when he was arrested for hit-and-run last night , that officers didn't feel the need to perform a sobriety test." Plus "when they found Taylor, he was standing outside of his car -- which was missing a front tire. The tire was found at the scene of the crash .. which means Taylor may have driven several miles on just the axle." He was taken to the station house and released on $500 bail. more ›
