The Port Authority announced that families of 9/11 victims will be able to descend into "the Pit" of Ground Zero briefly during this year's September 11 anniversary. Last year, the state and city waged an emotional, public battle with victims' families, who were upset that the 2007 anniversary events would not be near the actual World Trade Center, but at nearby Zuccotti Park instead. Then-governor Spitzer and Mayor Bloomberg explained the construction prevented families from......

The city remembered the sixth anniversary of the World Trade Center attacks yesterday with a subdued ceremony. First responders, including police officers, firefighters, and EMTs, read the 2,750 victims' names throughout the morning in Zuccotti Park, near the Ground Zero. Victims' families were allowed to descend a ramp into the "Pit" amid the construction of Ground Zero, where a temporary reflecting pool was placed. Mourners placed flowers in the pool and letters on the......

Jim Riches is the Deputy Chief of the FDNY. He is one of the producers of Urban Legend, a video that doggedly questions the supposedly heroic actions of Mayor Giuliani on 9/11. We recently asked him a few questions about that, today's anniversary and the future of the WTC. How long have you been in the FDNY? 30 years experience in some of the busiest firehouses in NYC. Which firehouse are you working at now?......

After weeks of anger and public recrimination, the Mayor and families of September 11 victims have come to a compromise about this year's anniversary ceremony. Families will now be able to enter the "pit," which is where the basement of the World Trade Center once stood. Controversy over the sixth anniversary of the attacks emerged after the mayor and Governor Spitzer sent victims' families a letter saying that the ceremony, held at Ground Zero in......

It's the future, now! The Daily Intelligencer posted this Skidmore, Owings & Merrill/SWIM rendering of Freedom Tower's lobby, and finds out from SOM's TJ Gottesdiener that the lobby will shed "light into the memorial pool." Notice how the way light falls in Freedom Tower's lobby mimics how light would fall in the World Trade Center's lobby. It's wild to think there's a lobby rendering - remember when Freedom Tower was just redesign upon redesign?......

A group of September 11 victims' family groups have officially asked for permission to have this year's September 11 ceremony at Ground Zero. Last month, Mayor Bloomberg and Governor Spitzer sent a letter to families explaining that the ceremony would be moved to Zuccotti Park, because the World Trade Center site has a lot of construction. But families have been skeptical that the park will be able to hold enough people and call the space......

Unhappy that this year's September 11 anniversary events will be moved from Ground Zero to Zuccotti Park, some families of September 11 victims are demanding that the events be moved back or else they'll hold their own ceremony at Ground Zero. The AP reports that a group of eleven September 11 family groups sent a letter to Governor Spitzer and Mayor Bloomberg, saying, "As America watches the memorial service on Sept. 11, 2007, we are......

Some families of September 11 victims are upset that officials have moved this year's anniversary events from the World Trade Center site to Zuccotti Park. Governor Spitzer and Mayor Bloomberg sent a letter to family members explaining that the services would be moved to the park (which is at Broadway and Liberty) because of the rebuilding work. Tunnels are being constructed for the transit work. Besides rebuilding work, there are renewed searches for remains.......
