In typical Philly fashion, we're not really sure if it's actually spring yet. Sure, the calendar tells us it's spring, but it sure didn't feel like it earlier this week. Thankfully, the weather only now appears to be coming around, and we couldn't be more excited. The folks at Making Time and r5 Productions are excited too, because they can go forward with their "Spring Fling" event tomorrow without having to pretend that their title is some sort of ironic commentary on global warming. more ›

  • In other health care related news, Laurence T. McKinney, M.D., operated a pill mill out of his office in Northeast Philadelphia. He was hawking prescriptions for Xanax and Percocet for $100 a piece, reports say.

Looks like we're getting a new park in South Philly. I'm actually pretty embarrassed that I didn't notice it sooner, since the park is less than three blocks from where I live. A small lot of land on Dickinson Street between Moyamensing Avenue and 2nd Street is in the process of being renovated. I can't say when the process started, but I remember noticing (and then forgetting about it) that they had started revamping it a while ago. The lot used to contain cracked pavement and a giant tree and I could never tell if it was a public space or someone's side yard. more ›

Comedian Steve Byrne, who will be hitting the stage tonight at Helium Comedy Club, is one of the funniest comedians we've seen recently on Comedy Central, and his DVD, Steve Byrne's Happy Hour, had us rolling on the floor. Byrne is on tour promoting his upcoming Comedy Central special, The Byrne Identity, which will air this summer. We had a chance to chat with him before his show about his new material, social networking, and, of course, cheesesteaks. more ›

Once chucked into the MTV trashcan as a "one-hit wonder" in the late 1990s, indie rock heroes Nada Surf (MySpace) has shown that triumph over tyrannical mainstream record labels is possible. Each of the band's albums is better than the last, as it has continued to build its following and sell out shows all across the country (including this week's show at the Unitarian Church). more ›

There's a party going on Friday, April 2 at North Bowl, and you should be there. Why? To support local geeks Mikey Ilagan and Tim Quirino, who are representing Geekadelphia in Chapter 2 of the Ford Fiesta Movement. more ›

If you were underwhelmed with the new film version of , perhaps give the stage version over at Media Theater a try. It's a musical version, done the way the story is "meant to be told." more ›

If you've been waiting for the chance to let local theater makers know just how much you love their work, or are waiting for the opportunity to bitch about the fact that the same shows get done three times in one season, then here is your chance. Throughout the month of April, a giant red couch (rather unfortunately named the Casting Couch) will be traveling to spots through out the city. At each stop, a well known Philly theater-maker will be talking with Philadelphia citizens about theater and its value in their lives. If you like theater, it's a great chance to let the city's theater artists know what you want and expect when you go to see a show. If you don't go see much theater or any at all, it may be a great time for you to let the folks know what keeps you away. Is it the ticket prices? Do you find it boring or do you just not know what it is going on? more ›

  • Fear not, a record stands! The New Jersey Nets won last night giving them 10 for the season. The 1972-73 Philadelphia 76ers are still the worst team in the history of the NBA.

Friend of Phillyist, multi-blogging sensation, geekster extraordinaire, Mr. Eric Smith is writing a book. No, no, not that novel you've heard rumblings of. This is a different book. About whiskey! more ›

Last week I had a concert experience that warmed my little Jersey girl heart. As a last minute pinch-hitter for the illustrious Ross Currie, I hightailed it from East Passyunk to the Sports Complex for the Bon Jovi/Dashboard Confessional show. A quick ticket exchange later and I was inside the Wachovia Center, or, as it will henceforth be known: "Mullet Dome." While the count of business in the front, party in the back hairstyles (P.S.—Mostly on women, some with glitter!) may not have been nearly as high as at a Poison show, the number of leopard-print outfits certainly made up for it. more ›
