Like the Egg McMuffin, the Egg McMatzo is one of those "breakfast" foods that is appropriate to eat for lunch. Most breakfast sandwiches come with sausage or bacon. Jews, of course, don't eat that. So we'll replace the pig with a potato pancake, or "latke."
Latkes are normally eaten on Chanukah, and they take forever to make from scratch.

Thankfully, Streit's has a kosher for Passover Potato Pancake Mix that takes all of five minutes to prepare - just add water and egg. Then fry it in lots and lots of oil.
You may be tempted to bust out the apple sauce and eat the latkes straight away. But put those aside for just a minute. Your patience will be rewarded. Mix an egg with a little bit of milk to make it fluffy. Don't worry about mixing milk and meat, eggs are in the neutral zone. Then fry it and fold it over to give it some height. Stack the latke and egg between two pieces of matzo and voila! Season with salt or ketchup as desired.

We're always sad to hear such stories -- a tipster let us know yesterday that Ceba, an 18-month-old Cattle dog/Pit Bull mix, was stolen from in front of Rainbow Grocery on Tuesday. Ceba's owners are offering a hefty reward for his return. more ›

Blick Art Supplies is moving from their current location on Van Ness into a much bigger spot along the "liveliest" stretch of Market Street this summer, just a couple of doors down from the former Pearl Art & Craft Supplies (RIP). It will now be a Blick Arts and Crafts Superstore, so fortunately there will still be a convenient and more affordable alternative to Flax. We haven't been to Flax in a long time though -- so what do you all think, how do their prices hold up? more ›

The superlative British mezzo-soprano Alice Coote will give her first solo recital in San Francisco tonight at Herbst theater, for SF Performances 30th anniversary season. The theme of the evening: English art songs. She impressed everyone in her SF debut at SF Opera in Alcina, and returned to great acclaim in Idomeneo, where the worst one could tell about her was that she impersonated her male character so well, she looked like Nicolas Sarkozy. Did we write that? Oops. She'll be back in September as Charlotte in Massenet's opera, Werther. more ›

'Dynasty' Star John Forsythe Dies

dynasty2.jpg

Although he brutally raped Krystal and killed his son's boyfriend during a fit of unbridled homophobic rage, Blake Carrington still remains one of TV's much-loved silver foxes. Sadly, John Forsythe, the smooth-voiced actor who portrayed the Denver Carrington oil tycoon on Dynasty, died yesterday. He was 92. Forsythe succumbed to a yearlong battle with cancer. In addition to surviving the Modavian massacre, Forsythe was also famous for being the voice of "Charlie" in yet another Aaron Spelling gem, Charlie's Angels. And now? It's only fitting that rests among the angels. Alas. You will be missed, Blake.

Highway 101 Shut Down in San Mateo

SFGate (who have recently installed a glorious 'box of alarm' on their homepage similar to CBS 5) alerts us to the fact that Highway 101 has been shut down in both directions "to allow utility workers to repair downed power lines." The highway is expected to be open for traffic any second now.

The 2010 Census is certainly way more tech-savvy than any other in human history, and they've put up this fancy interactive map (the real purpose of which we don't quite get) to show you how many people in your city or neighborhood have sent back their census forms. The nerds in Green, Ohio take the prize for most prompt form-filler-outers, with 72% already in. The national average is at 54%, and in SF, a quick scan of neighbhorhoods shows the Marina and Castro hovering right around that average, with the Tenderloin a bit behind at 39% and the Twin Peaks/Forest Hill area a touch ahead at 62%. more ›
