Three women were hit and killed by cars today in isolated incidents in Manhattan and Brooklyn. A female cyclist was struck by a school bus near the corner of Delancey and Ludlow streets in the Lower East Side at around 4 pm, according to the Post. The tabloid reports that the bus was empty, while ABC notes that the vehicle belonged to the bus company Atlantic Express and was carrying two children at the time. more ›

Thieves with screwdrivers broke into a Midwood home, locked two children and a housekeeper in the bathroom, and stole the family's 2010 Ferrari, according to police. The perps broke into the house — which is near East Seventh Street and Quentin Road — through a side door yesterday at around 7 pm and encountered a 12-year-old girl doing homework in the basement. "My sister thought they were firemen, and she led them to me," 17-year-old victim Isaac Douek told the Daily News. more ›

Brooklyn's James Madison High School is turning out to be a hotbed of Sex Ed. Yesterday it was reported that two female teachers were caught naked in a classroom together by a seemingly unopportunistic janitor — however, the Post now says that the janitor thought the teachers were students! (So really he was just being smart by not getting involved.) Meanwhile, there's now a third female being investigated. Allison Musacchio didn't share her colleagues interest in experimentation however, she went straight for the cliched-yet-still-scandalous teacher-student hook-up. more ›

A tipster spotted this truck stuck under the Q train subway station on Avenue J in Midwood this morning around 8:45 a.m. We're told "the truck was all crumpled and the fire department had to come out." We're guessing at this point they're just waiting for a giant stick of butter. more ›

A 21-year-old Brooklyn man convicted of kidnapping a young girl was sentenced today to 10 years in prison despite his pleas for "mercy and leniency." Bernard Mutterperl wept before a judge, pleading that he needed help "outside of jail" as punishment for the Mother's Day 2007 incident in Midwood where he followed Xochil Garcia home and grabbed the girl, who was then 11. But the judge fell on the more stringent side of sentencing that could have fallen anywhere from 3 1/2 to 15 years. Garcia, now 13, testified at the trial this spring and spoke again in court today, recounting how she has suffered panic attacks and feared going out alone. She looked at Mutterperl and said, "You messed up my life. Some people want to fight me for no reason. Some people want to be my friend so they can be on TV ... I do not have any real friends now because of this." more ›

In a case that seems suspiciously like a win-win for everybody involved, a Midwood grandmother is suing her stand-up comedian daughter-in-law for "defaming her with racist lies" in her comedy routines. Sunda Croonquist of Paterson does pretty standard comedy club material about her husband Mark Zafrin's family, sharing her experiences as a black woman marrying into a Jewish family, joking that "Jews don't know how to whisper" and having "two kids in two years makes her suicidal, having two kids in one year would make her Orthodox." After years of allegedly enjoying the material, now Ruth Zafrin has apparently taken offense to the barbs she finds "malicious" and "based on hatred towards her." Two other in-laws have signed on as co-plaintiffs and to give the whole affair the ultimate whiff of a hack sitcom pilot, the comedian Croonquist is being represented by her lawyer husband, taking on his mother. Croonquist claims that her in-law and family jokes are not mean-spirited (she also "converted to Judaism" and "keeps a kosher house"), but rather, "natural laugh-getters." At a health care reform town hall in Fresh Meadows Wednesday, one angry attendee warned Anthony Weiner, "Last time I looked this is still America—not China, not Russia, not Cuba," and last night in Midwood the congressman got more of the same. During a noontime meeting at the Council Center for Senior Citizens, one elderly constituent opined, "It's a Socialist country!" The crowd cheered, for surely all in attendance proudly refuse such "Socialist" handouts as Social Security and Medicare. But the bigger issue yesterday was that the meeting delayed the center's lunch service. Hungry retired postal worker David Figman told the Daily News, "I came to eat and I came to eat on time. They are having chicken marsala today and the food is good." More seniors grew impatient as the meeting dragged on past 12:15, and 61-year-old Linda Lefton fumed, "Usually our lunch starts at noon. I think he is going to cause us to delay our lunch. That's no good." 76-year-old Albert Fink moaned, "I'm just hungry." Finally, administrators interceded to end the forum at 12:22 p.m., but it makes ya' wonder: Why is Obama trying to euthanize seniors with forced starvation? more ›

We're sharing it as a reminder that, to paraphrase Zooey Glass, there are still nice things in this world of death panels and Espadas. The only way this little scene could be improved upon is if the portrait, by artist Andy M. A few weeks ago the price of a slice of pizza went up to a groundbreaking $5 at Di Fara, the Midwood pizzeria that's become something of a mecca for pizza nerds around the world. Today the Post ponders whether customers are ready to swallow the dollar increase, which owner Dom DeMarco insists is necessary because he imports all the ingredients from Italy and prices have gone up across the board. Brooklyn's Phyllis Turim groaned, "They must be out of their minds. It would have to be the best slice of pizza in the world." But many assert that, in fact, it is, and Slice blogger Adam Kuban declares, "If it were an everyday slice, no, $5 would be too much. But a lot of the people lining up at Di Fara are pizza tourists. It's like a vacation—you don't do it all the time, and you've already prepared yourself for the overcharge." Have you vacationed at Di Fara recently? A mostly vegetarian take-out restaurant named Salud—specializing in fresh juices, soups-from-scratch, and sandwiches—is now open in Midwood. Owner Eduardo Larios (an Art Director during the week) and family opened up the small shop a few weeks ago on a mostly gloomy dead end stretch of Avenue H, just off Coney Island Avenue, and Salud has quickly become one of the neighborhood's brightest spots. more ›

Blogger Flatbush Pigeon recently noted the curious case of Pomegranate, the enormous new supermarket currently in its final stages of construction in Flatbush/Midwood. The food store takes the place of a kosher bakery, another store, and an auto repair shop. Giant pomegranates loom over Coney Island Avenue and Avenue L.
