PITTSBURGH -- Chase Utley will undergo surgery on his right thumb Thursday, the Phillies announced.

The surgery will be performed by hand specialist Andrew Weiland at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. No timetable is immediately available, but prior similar surgeries have taken at least six weeks to heal.

Utley was placed on the disabled list Tuesday.

The Phillies have not issued an update on the condition of third baseman Placido Polanco, who is also on the disabled list with left elbow inflammation.

More to come...

Okay. Here is one trade suggestion. Granted it's a little complicated. The Astros send Oswalt to the Angels, agreeing to pay a large share of his salary. They get Kazmir back from the Angels. The Phillies get Frandsen and Reckling from the Angels and send Savery, Aumont, and Naylor (or whoever) to the Astros.
About Matt Gelb and Bob Brookover

Matt Gelb is in his first season covering the Phillies. He was hired by The Inquirer in August 2009 after graduating from Syracuse University. He also interned at The Inquirer in 2008 and has covered just about every sport for the paper. Born and raised in Bucks County, he attended Central Bucks High School West. Bob Brookover joins the Phillies' coverage team after seven years as the Inquirer's beat writer for the Eagles. Brookover, 46, was hired by the Inquirer in 2000 as the Phillies' beat writer, after spending 13 years writing about the team for two suburban newspapers. After 2 1/2 seasons of covering the Phillies for the Inquirer, Brookover decided to dip his feet in the NFL pool. During his time away from baseball, the Phillies started playing a brand of the game unrecognizable to Brookover, who covered just two winning teams in 15 seasons. The Phillies also moved from a concrete bowl with a lot of vacancies to a cash cow with standing-room only tickets for a lot of games. Follow him on Twitter here.
