Flooded Murray leaves many shacks under water

UP to 30 shacks are under water in the Riverland town of Morgan.

Mid Murray Council Mayor Dave Burgess said sewerage services to some of the shack areas had been shut down since the flooding from the River Murray upstream.

"It has cut access to some of the shack areas. We've had to shut down effluent schemes so people cannot use their shacks," Mr Burgess said.

"But the upside is that the backwaters are getting a good soaking, the wildlife is coming back, with lots of yabbies to be had and it's very spectacular." Mr Burgess said the council instituted a policy about 20 years ago requiring the ground level of all shacks have removable panels.

Locals said up to 30 shacks were under water since the river started rising last week.

Terminus Hotel publican Tony O'Donnell said at least three of the main shack areas have been affected.

"All the shackies have moved their stuff out from the ground floor, most moved out about Christmas time," Mr O'Donnell said. "Everybody knew it was coming  ...  they predicted it was going to peak mid-January but they moved it back."

Correct me if I'm wrong, irrigators are receiving around 75% water alocations. They have survived on as low as 10-12% for the last few years, all be it a bit tough. 100% allocation is the over allocation that everyone is talking about that has been damaging the system for some time now. The majority of irrigators are much more water wise now through necessity, 100% allocations should never be reached again.

It is human nature to want to live in a comfort zone that is unchanging. People do not realize there are no straight lines in nature and nothing stays the same. Only King Canute was foolish enough to think he could turn the tides. The human species has survived by adapting to natural events - not trying to fantasize about the past or defying the future.

"Murray in flood and the ALP have water restrictions for our Riverland farmers. Why don't the media interview the genius who negotiated this deal." Comment 15 of 15 Totally agree. At the very least Rann should renegotiate the deal. But there is no election this March so why should he bother himself?
