Late Returns: Waiting For Fred Thompson

Fred Thompson

First Posted: 04/14/11 07:00 PM ET Updated: 04/14/11 07:00 PM ET

People wonder more and more if some yet-to-be named candidate will jump in and save the 2012 GOP presidential candidate field from itself.

No one wants to give Mitt Romney a chance, I guess? He believes in America, y'all! (And the individual mandate. Never forget.)

But even if some unknown dark-horse savior contender emerges in this hour of need, will it be of any help? Ed Kilgore says it's not very likely, and recalls what happened when the savior came in the form of Fred Thompson:

Thompson's perceived electability was such that his putative candidacy was a much-awaited event, expected to change the dynamics of the race overnight. And once he finally announced in September of 2007--on "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno," no less--he won a slew of early endorsements, including the coveted nods from the National Right to Life Committee and Iowa's conservative potentate Steve King.

But it was already becoming clear that he lacked commitment. Even before his appearance on "Leno," there were abundant signs that he wasn't running for president so much as walking--or even riding a golf cart--with abundant stops for rest and ice cream. His first Iowa appearance, in August, was at the Iowa State Fair, a must-do for any candidate and particularly one like Thompson, who had already skipped the official Straw Poll that serves as the major fundraiser for the state GOP. With the eyes of the first-in-the-nation-caucus state on him, Big Fred showed up at the sweaty, extremely informal event sporting Gucci loafers and proceeded to spend the day tooling around the fairgrounds in the aforementioned cart--a very big no-no for anyone who wasn't either disabled or a major Fair donor.

This turned out to be an apt harbinger of Thompson's campaign style.

Go read the whole thing.

So for a brief, mad moment today, CNN reported that Donald Trump planned to announce whether he was running or not on the season finale of his reality show, The Apprentice.

Trump himself denied the claim soon after, telling Talk1300, "I can't announce during the show, I really can't...I'm not allowed to...I don't know where it came from."

He doesn't know where it came from? Let me be of assistance, Donald! It came from Michael Cohen. Your senior adviser? The guy who calls up reporters, representing you in this campaign effort? Yeah! That guy. That's who "confirmed" it to CNN. You guys should maybe get on the same page. [New York Observer; CNN]

Apparently, Tim Pawlenty pollster Jon Lerner "privately acknowledged in an email yesterday that Pawlenty has "bad marks" on his record from a conservative point of view." Lerner sent the email to the Club For Growth, for whom he also works, and someone there leaked it to the press, which is always a good sign! (The email was "notably short on giddy enthusiasm." Okay!) [Ben Smith]

Barack Obama is back out on the fundraising trail. Word is it's for some sort of presidential re-election. [First Read]

Marco Rubio has made peace with the fact that reporters are going to ask him, all of the damned time, if he's going to run for president or not. Previously, Rubio had been remarkably sharp in shooting those inquiries down. But eventually they grind you down and drive the fight right out of you. [Roll Call]

OK, I'm all in favor of recycling, but this is over the top. Fred need to run for something - but it's the Old Age Actors Home.

To Senator Fred the presidency would be just another acting gig just like that Oscar winning performance that Reagan did acting as president for 8 long years in the White House.

When Fred showed up on "The Good Wife" Monday night, I wondered if it was a foreshadowing of another run for the Presidency. Gawd, hopefully not. I liked him a lot as MDA Arthur Branch on Law & Order but as a president? Not so much.

I was pretty surprised too see him on Good Wife, too. And...also wondered if this is another move for him to throw his political hat in the ring.... You'd think he'd get a clue. However, with the current "field" of candidates, he might look competent!!

I, too liked him in L&O....but, that doesn't quite qualify him for office. He's a "dabbler"..he dabbles in acting, dabbles in gov't, dabbles in law..and that's fine. He's obviously a man who loves to explore his options.

But the highest office in the land needs a doer, a shaker, someone with some creds beyond face time on the TeeVee....
troika   04:00 PM on 4/15/2011
Has he been reduced to that level, where he needs to do a cameo? Gees!!!
LadyAurora   02:16 PM on 4/15/2011
I found it amusing that he was playing himself on "The Good Wife". But who else would they have gotten to be the lawyer for Chavez. I wonder if Thompson forgot it was a tv show?

Recently I've seen Fred Thompson doing commercials for reverse mortgages and noted that he's had some, shall we call it, "face work" done. Please! What's the point of this piece?

Four years ago, Hillary Clinton had the Democratic nomination as a virtual lock. Barack Obama was a nobody (now we'd call that "foreshadowing").

The process is the process. If the RINO's come up with another McCain, the Campaigner in Chief might get 4 more years. He's already switched to campaign mode, ignoring the fact that there's a country in crisis that needs leadership.

But, again, if we get another RINO? It all comes down to how much of a shambles the economy is. Given the rumbles we're reading about here at HuffPo, a Depression isn't out of the question: Inflation, high interest rates, high suicide rates, high unemployment rates, all at the same time.

A catastrophe like that would allow ANY Republican to win, but short of that? The process had better weed out the RINO's and come up with someone with crowd appeal - or we get 4 more years of the nightmare.

Only 3 things will save Obama in my opinion.

1. Price of oil goes down, it's continual climb will cause more layoffs and undermine the economy. He would carry the blame due to the corrolation between oil prices and war in Libya.

2. Our involvement in the war in Libya expands.

3. The Republicans shoot themselves, which they are very capable of doing.

Only three?

1. The economy is recovering.
2. The right has no credible candidates.
3. Looks like the Iraq war might be tapering off.
4. Libya should go away before long.
5. Entitlement preservation.

The nightmare consists of right wing politics doing everything and anything it can to undermine our economic recovery. Sure, we have been in crisis. It is a good bet that you have contributed to the insanity by making noise about birth certificates and dismantling social security and medicare, etc.

" ignoring the fact that there's a country in crisis that needs leadership."

Nice touch. I bet you call it Obamacare.

So, you believe that it's impossible for someone to be a multi-tasker?

Of course, Obama is running for re-election....that's what politicians do.

But to assume that he will ignore the rest of the world or the problems our nation has is ludicrous. You folks had too many years of watching the ineptness and incompetentence of GW Bush...who couldn't chew gum and walk at the same time. That mental midget couldn't keep him mind on anything for very long.

As for the GOPers chance at the WH? Ain't gonna happen. After 8 years of Bush and 4 years of Republican harrumping, whining, blocking legislation and pandering to the least of our citizenry, they don't stand a chance..... It will be a long time before one of them sits in the Oval Office again.

The GOP might have to go to the grave yard and find the old bones of Thompson, to be their man , to go against PRESIDENT OBAMA? My God, they have stop going under the rocks, now the dig deeper. This will be the skits for SNL, lENO,STEWART, COLBERT,AND LETTERMEN for the rest of the 2011 and 2012 period.

If they're going to the graveyard, they might as well dig up Reagan.

Every time I saw Fred on the campaign trail all I could think was "Weekend at Bernie's: Bernie goes Presidential".
