Here’s the Scoop: Life & Style Seeks News Director

In March, Life & Style was looking for an art director, and now it looks like its staffing up again. The magazine is searching for a news director to join its Englewood Cliffs, N.J. office.

In this role, you’ll be in charge of the news division, working with the mag’s east coast and west coast bureaus, as well as reporters and journalists around the country. If Brangelina hits a rough patch, you’re on it. If a celeb gets arrested, you know why. You’ll develop engaging content, and work with photographers, publicists and sources to package each story in a compelling way.

To be considered, you should have demonstrated editorial experience and solid news judgment. You’ll be representing the mag in the media, so camera-ready candidates are most wanted. Your schedule should be extremely flexible, and you should thrive under deadline. If you think you have what it takes, apply here.

Disney Trademarks “Seal Team 6″

In a perfect example of a big media company looking to capitalize on current events, The Walt Disney Company has trademarked “Seal Team 6,” which also happens to be the name of the elite special forces team that killed Osama Bin Laden.

The trademark applications came on May 3rd, two days after the operation that killed Bin Laden… and two days after “Seal Team 6″  was included in thousands of news articles and TV programs focusing on the operation.

Disney’s trademark applications for “Seal Team 6″ cover clothing, footwear, headwear, toys, games and “entertainment and education services,” among other things.

You can read the actual applications here, here and here.

Horacio Silva Leaves the New York Times Fashion Magazine

Online director Horacio Silva is leaving T, the New York Times fashion magazine, after nearly ten years with Times‘ fashion, reports New York Magazine.

In an internal memo, T Managing Editor George Gene Gustines called Silva “one of T’s pioneers” and added that “Insanity was his beat.”

Silva said he has been planning on departing for some time: “About four years ago, I wrote into my blackberry ‘On May 5, time to resign.’” He resigned on May 8th, so we’re pretty impressed.

Silva will be moving on to consulting work and possibly to write a book. He also told NY Mag, “I might finally take Qaddafi up on his offer to curate his wardrobe for the Costume Institute.” Let’s hope he goes with that.

Newspaper Apologizes for “Hottest Sex Offender” List

Today in offputting, we hear from Poynter that Houston Press, a Village Voice affiliate, wrote a post called “10 Hottest Women on the Texas Sex Offenders List.”

Funny stuff. Note that women on the list have assaulted boys and girls ranging from two to 16 years old.

The writer of the piece, editor Richard Connelly, was, obviously, taken to task in the comments under the post, such as this one: “There is nothing about child molestation that should be glorified. I cannot believe this got published and everyone involved should be fired.”

Now he has issued an apology, and explained the genesis of this post:

Last week I spoke to two veteran child-porn prosecutors… It triggered an idea about how people have a pre-conceived notion of what dangerous predators “always” look like — slovenly fat guys in t-shirts asking kids if they wanted a ride — and how best to shake that notion up.

Ad Age: Americans Spent 53 Million Minutes on Facebook in March

Ad Age has the stat of the week, or maybe year, today: In March, Americans spent 53 million minutes on Facebook. That adds up to about 100 years. 100 years! Reading about what people you don’t even like are doing!

Ad Age explains that this breaks down to about 12 minutes a day per user, and then puts that into context:

In 2009, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average American spent 8.7 hours a night sleeping. Men spent just 16 minutes a day doing housework (women spent 36 minutes). Exercise? 18 minutes. Religious and spiritual activities? Nine minutes. You get the picture.

That is just sad. We live in a world where revolutions are erupting all – oh lord have mercy. Peggy just posted more pics of her in that damn bikini, like she’s something special. That girl has no shame.

Newsweek’s Next Issue Boasts Most Ad Pages in Over a Year

Everyone (including us) had a good laugh at Newsweek in April when it was discovered that one of its issues had just six ads. Well, the tables have turned, because The New York Post is reporting that the next issue of Newsweek will feature 32 ad pages, the most in over a year.

Go ahead Tina Brown, stick it to us. We deserve it. Just don’t forget to stick it to everyone else too.
