Pricing Carbon

The Prime Minister Julia Gillard outlined the Government’s plan to cut pollution, tackle climate change and deliver the economic reform Australia needs to move to a clean energy future.

The Gillard Labor Government has a plan to build a Clean Energy Future for our children by taxing our biggest polluters – and return every cent to assist households, support jobs and tackle climate change.

The carbon price is a price on pollution that will make dirty energy more expensive and clean energy more attractive.

Only the big polluters – around 500 – will pay based on every tonne of pollution they emit.

All the revenue raised will go to households, industry and supporting the programs for tackling climate change.

A price of carbon pollution is the best way to transition into a low-carbon economy and drive innovation and investment needed to build a clean energy nation.

Bringing down carbon dioxide levels is critically important to our children’s future – it is about ensuring they have an environment they can live in.

Tony Abbott is mindlessly negative and thinks climate change is ‘absolute crap’. He is running a dishonest scare campaign and wants to let big polluters off the hook.

A carbon price will have a modest impact on prices.  But to make sure families can deal with any changes, the Labor Government will provide generous household assistance.

  • 9 in 10 households will receive assistance through tax cuts and/or payment increases.
  • Almost 6 million households will get tax cuts or increases in payments that cover the entire average price impact.
  • Over 4 million Australian households will get an extra buffer with assistance that covers 120% of the average price impact of the carbon price.
  • Over 1 million Australians will no longer need to lodge a tax return.
  • On average, it will cost households $9.90 per week but they get $10.10 per week in assistance This assistance is permanent and will increase.
  • The Government will review the adequacy of assistance each year and will increase it further if necessary.
