Multi-Party Climate Change Committee

The Gillard Labor Government has established the Multi-Party Climate Change Committee (MPCCC) to consider options for the introduction of a carbon price into our economy and to help build consensus on how Australia will tackle climate change.

The Committee includes representatives of the Government, the Australian Greens, and independent parliamentarians.

It is also assisted by 4 independent experts (Professor Ross Garnaut, Professor Will Steffen, Ms Patricia Faulkner and Mr Rod Sims).

The Coalition was invited to participate but refused.

The MPCCC meets monthly and following each meeting publishes a communiqué to keep the public informed of its progress. The communiqués are published at http://www.climatechange.gov.au/government/initiatives/multi-party-committee.aspx.

The Prime Minister has made clear 2011 is the decision year for dealing with a carbon price and the Gillard Labor Government will be working hard to build consensus with business and the community to introduce this important economic reform.

A carbon price will help us cut pollution and will drive investment in clean energy.

The Multi-Party Climate Change Committee will continue discussions through 2011 on the best way to transform our economy with a carbon price.
