Types of AA Degrees Including Associates Degrees Online

You can earn associate’s degrees online or through traditional on-campus programs. If you choose to pursue an online associate’s degree there are many online colleges and universities ready to help. Whether you’re looking to enter the workforce immediately after graduation or continue your education and acquire a BA degree, an associate’s degree is a wise investment. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that holding an associate’s degree allows you to earn more than $6,000 in additional yearly income when compared to someone with only a high school diploma.

The type of associate’s degree that you will earn largely depends on your field of study and long-term educational goals. Though specifics vary from institution to institution, the following generally holds true:

  • Associate in Industrial Technology (AIT) or Associate in Occupational Studies (AOS) degree programs require no general education classes. Those who are entering the workforce after graduation in fields such as computer repair or electronics commonly get an AIT degree or AOS degree.
  • Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree programs involve a minimal amount of general education classes. Those who are entering the workforce after graduation as paralegals, paramedics or similar professionals usually acquire an AAS degree.
  • Associate of Science (AS) degree programs require a full range of general education coursework. Students who are continuing their education at a four-year institution in fields such as mathematics or natural sciences commonly get an AS degree.
  • Associate of Arts (AA) or Associate of Fine Arts (AFA) degree programs require a full range of general education coursework. Students who are continuing their education at a four-year institution in areas like the humanities or social sciences usually acquire an AA degree or AFA degree.
