Printable Biography

Mike grew up in the First Church of God, St. Joseph, Michigan with both parents active in layperson roles in that congregation. Makiko was born a true pastor's kid. Both of her parents ministered in the Salvation Army of Japan, and then in the Saga Church of God from 1979 until 1983, when they planted their own Church of God congregation in Osaka. Mike met Makiko soon after coming to Japan as a SAM English teacher in Osaka and Kobe in 1993. They were married on August 27, 1994. Makiko continued her work at a Christian bookstore until Mike completed his SAM assignment in 1996.

Mike and Makiko then went to the United States so that Mike could pursue a master's degree in teaching English as a second language. Upon Mike's graduation in 1999 they heard of the need for a SAM to teach English at Tamagawa Seigakuin, a Church of God-affiliated junior/senior high school in Tokyo. Feeling called by God, Mike and Makiko returned to Japan and Mike taught at Tamagawa Seigakuin from 1999 until 2003, when they felt the new calling to establish their current ministry at Hagiyama.

The happiest result of Mike and Makiko's work at Hagiyama has been to see both an English student and a Sunday school student get baptized. Other blessings include many nonbeliever English students attending church events or holiday services. Please pray for continued growth of the English ministry and effective Bible lessons, particularly in the wake of the March 11, 2011 earthquake/tsunami. Please pray that Mike and Makiko might join the Church of God in Japan in bringing not only physical relief but also spiritual healing and revival to the suffering people of Japan.
