The Buzz: Remember 1987, when Johnny Depp was a TV star with only three movie roles to his name? Now he's pulling a Jonathan Frid with a cameo appearance in the movie version of the show that brought him fame. But this is a Jonah Hill initiative all the way, one of two remakes he pushed through development (the other, The Sitter, looks insipid at best -- like Spy Kids meets Date Night). Funny thing is: I like both Hill and co-star Channing Tatum in dramatic roles over action/comedies.

Scheming on a way to save their father's ranch, the Alvarez brothers find themselves in a war with Mexico's most feared drug lord.

The Buzz: Will Ferrell is experimenting with indie movies again, and this is his most promising venture for those of us who like him when his comedy is unhinged and borderline inappropriate. Funny or Die staff director Matt Piedmont is running the show here. Strange how both Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal have excelled as producers but faded somewhat as actors.

The Buzz: The best and most genuine left-handed compliment we can give to the Duplass Brothers? Studios and critics alike love their films, as do the people who actually see them, but it's not like they make money or earn Oscar nominations (yet). Perhaps that is their destiny with their latest, a brisk, day-in-the-life subtle comedy that wisely pairs Jason Segel and Ed Helms for the first time. Did you hear about the opening scene, with Segel on the can, tape recording his love for M. Night Shyamalan's Signs?

The Buzz: Tony Kaye's latest opens in New York City, where it became the talk of the Tribeca Film Festival last year. It's definitely an ambitious love-or-hate analysis with a broader scope than the confines of the classroom. See it just for Adrien Brody's performance - that's the general consensus and even the film's detractors indicate Brody's work is some of his best. If you want more background on Kaye's real-life antics, beyond the well known American History X episode, go here.

The Buzz: Belgium film is hot right now with Bullhead a Foreign Language Oscar nominee and Bike, the latest from the Dardenne brothers, building steady momentum since its Jury Grand Prize win at Cannes last year.

The Buzz: This experimental action/comedy emerged from last year's South by Southwest Film Festival with a distribution deal and solid reviews that were mostly free of hype. Co-directors Brandon and Jason Trost have expanded their 2007 short into a feature, and they've kept busy since wrapping this project; Brandon shot Rob Zombie's upcoming movie The Lords of Salem while brother Jason formed a production company with Lucas Till of X-Men: First Class. The FP won't be a hard sell for genre fans and I wonder if it's going to get released in other countries, where it might play well. Theater chain the Alamo Drafthouse's distribution arm is releasing the movie in the U.S.

The Buzz: A South by Southwest festival darling from last year, even the most mild reviews of Robbie Pickering's directorial debut suggest you keep an eye on the filmmaker, who wrote this story as his stepfather was dying. For some of us, the opportunity to see the wonderful Rachael Harris in a lead role is worth the price of admission - even a quiet prayer for some awards buzz as she plays against type.

After his wife is assaulted, a husband enlists the services of a vigilante group to help him settle the score. Then he discovers they want a 'favor' from him in return.

The Buzz: One problem with Nic Cage's increasingly bizarro career choices: when he appears in a straight thriller, our fascination with him dims just a bit. Meanwhile, can we assume that co-star January Jones hasn't been cast in anything since X-Men: First Class for a reason?
