The Buzz: Record numbers of fans of Suzanne Collins's novels have already bought their tickets, the opening weekend box office reportedly will eclipse Twilight's lofty heights, and those of us who wondered if Gary Ross was the right person to direct and co-write this franchise starter have been silenced. See? You can put a female character in a lead role, surround her with two male suitors, and have a story that appeals to both sexes.

The Buzz: This year's Attack the Block comes from Welsh filmmaker Gareth Evans, whose immersion in the Indonesia film scene yielded one of the most talked about movies from the film festival circuit in 2011. While the inevitable remake is in development, let's see if audiences buy into the hype and embrace the fighting form known as silat, which here is used to blur the line between the good guys and the bad. I love knowing the Evans wrote the script in English and had it translated for his actors, who in turn added native slang and made other dialogue adjustments.

Certificate R   -   Drama | Romance

Metascore: 82/100 (20 reviews)
The wife of a British Judge is caught in a self-destructive love affair with a Royal Air Force pilot.

The Buzz: You have to love Rachel Weisz; she does not take the easy or obvious route to the big screen. Before Terence Davies cast her in his latest project, stage versions of Terence Rattigan's play restored its appeal to contemporary audiences. The problem has always been the difficulty of feeling anything but impatience and/or contempt for Lady Collyer, who is no heroine or friend.

Certificate Not Rated   -   Crime | Thriller

Metascore: 38/100 (11 reviews)
A Secret Service Agent is held captive in the trunk of a car and endures mental and physical torture as terrorists attempt to extract information for their plot against the President of the United States.

The Buzz: Brake's twist ending has created somewhat intense debate among the early-bird audiences who have caught the thriller on VOD (it premiered there back in February). This might be Stephen Dorff's last ride, but I wouldn't be surprised to see this story continue on direct-to-DVD sequels (not an insult).

The Buzz: Co-directors Andrew and Jon Erwin have made a few Christian-themed direct-to-video projects and Jon was a crew member on Courageous, last year's biggest Faith film. With reproductive rights in the current media spotlight, the film might get namechecked by the media, but there's been little buzz on the project as its release date approaches.

- [LA/NYC]

Certificate PG-13   -   Drama | Romance

Metascore: 44/100 (9 reviews)
When his dancer partner, Mia, lands in the hospital after an accident, Armando persuades her to train for an upcoming wheelchair ballroom dancing contest.

The Buzz: Every review I've read of Susan Seidelman's dance-romance indicates the film's correctness inhibits the story from revealing anything about its characters or the darker moments its protagonist might face after learning she's become paralyzed from the waist down after being hit by a car. Still, the subject matter alone could make it a crowd pleaser. Seidelman currently is directing an aging female basketball comedy with a promising title, The Hot Flashes.

Certificate PG-13   -   Comedy | Drama

Metascore: 39/100 (9 reviews)
A guy in his mid-thirties watches as his life comically unravels after he enters into a relationship with the daughter of a former high school classmate.

The Buzz: Brie Larson's heavy hand with the eye-shadow and Chris Messina's mustache might not factor much into the plot, but they are two of many likeable elements to be found in this trailer, which inadvertently feels like it was made for a movie called, Jeff, Who Lives with Dad. The ennui of the thirtysomething Caucasian male has found its way to the big screen yet again, but Michael Knowles's seemingly good-natured comedy does feature some of our favorite TV actors.
