48 minutes ago | EW - Inside Movies | See recent EW.com - Inside Movies news »

Well, that’s one way to make an impression. The Hunger Games surpassed the wildest industry expectations to debut to $155 million, according to studio estimates.

That’s the third-biggest opening weekend ever, behind only Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2 ($169.2 million) and The Dark Knight ($158.4 million). It’s also the best debut ever for a non-sequel, crushing 2010′s Alice in Wonderland ($116.1 million), and it represents the top opening weekend for any picture outside the summer movie season. And, yes, it must be mentioned — The Hunger Games opened stronger than all four Twilight films.

Box Office: Anti-Abortion Film 'October Baby' and Action Import 'The Raid' Lead Specialty Market

1 hour ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

There's no denying the relative unexcitability today of any box office news today that isn't the record-crashing $155 million insanity that was the opening of "The Hunger Games." But that news belongs in a different column, so I digress.  While not $155 million debuts, there are actually some considerable success stories at the specialty box office this weekend, most notably the openings of Andrew and Jon Erwin's anti-abortion drama "October Baby" and Gareth Evans' much-hyped Indonesian import "The Raid: Redemption." Here's the rundown: The Debuts: "October Baby" (Samuel Goldwyn Films) On an aggressive 390 screens, Samuel Goldwyn released Andrew and Jon Erwin's "October Baby" to very strong numbers. The film -- about a college freshman who learns she is the "adopted survivor of an attempted abortion" (so says the film's official description) -- jumped into the overall »

Letter: Faith Brook obituary

1 hour ago | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

The obituary of Faith Brook reminded me of an episode during the second world war. I was in the Ats, stationed in Oxford, and Faith was with Stars in Battledress, working in the same area. One day, she was brought to our unit to face the commanding officer on a charge of burning her uniform skirt. I was appointed to be her escort, as I was of the same rank. We had a chance to talk before being marched in to hear the charges, and I found her delightfully friendly, relaxed and cheerful. At the hearing she freely admitted to being careless; she had not checked the heat of the iron, and so ruined the skirt. The outcome was that she was fined the cost of the garment, the money to be deducted from her pay.

What could have been a serious, intimidating experience was relieved by Faith's charm and sense of humour. »

Why did HBO drama Luck fall at the first hurdle?

1 hour ago | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Despite its all-star cast, Luck has been cancelled. But was the death of three horses really to blame?

It's an essential end credit after any contemporary film or TV show that No Animals Were Harmed during the course of its making. The livestock slaughtered for the cast and crew's buffet notwithstanding, we need to know that no goldfish sprained so much as a gill. This month Luck, the HBO series set in the demi-monde of the American racetrack world, starring, among others, Dustin Hoffman and Nick Nolte and co-created by Michael Mann (Heat, The Insider) and David Milch (Hill Street Blues), fell foul of this edict. Three horses, it emerged, had died in the course of production, prompting protests from Peta (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals); a second series was abruptly cancelled .

Mann, the director, has been indignant, and the cancellation has sparked a war of words between »

Weekend Box-Office: 'Hunger Games' On Fire with Third Best Opening Ever

1 hour ago | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Everyone knew The Hunger Games was going to be big, but how big seemed to be a mystery, but all those questions have been answered as the first film based on the Suzanne Collins trilogy of young adult novels now own the third best opening of all-time. Let's take a closer look... Laremy predicted the #1 movie correctly 4 Weeks In A Row The Hunger Games When I reported The Hunger Games had brought in $19.7 million from midnight openings alone and then said it should be looking at $150-160 million for the weekend, a lot of commenters didn't agree. My theory was that it wouldn't hit The Dark Knight status, but it would certainly top Twilight franchise status due to a larger demographic appeal. As it turns out that's exactly what happened, and with high CinemaScore ratings it will be interesting to see how this one does next weekend. Anyone care to wager an early guess? »

Weekend Box Office: 'Hunger Games' Scores Third Highest Opening In Box Office History With Massive $155 Million Haul

1 hour ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Who’s hungry? “The Hunger Games” proceeded to predictably beat the stuffing out of the box office, scoring $155 million, the third highest opening weekend in history, and highest for a non-sequel. The fan base came out in full force, no doubt, but so did the normals, as the books don’t (yet) have nearly the support of “Harry Potter” or “Twilight.” But make no mistake, this property had a similar groundswell of opinion, including an ad blitz and news and web coverage suggesting this was the “good” version of those pre-existing properties. Within three days, Lionsgate has their highest grossing domestic release of all time, and Hollywood’s strongest new franchise. Because everyone secretly loves child murder.

Fans were notably pleased, as the picture registered an ‘A’ Cinemascore, which shifted to an ‘A+’ for younger demographics. While there’s no full demo breakdown, it’s likely much of this audience were males, »

Journalist seeking truth about Khmer Rouge 'fears for his life'

Award-winning film-maker Thet Sambath says he has been followed, harassed and chased during his research

One of Cambodia's leading journalists and foremost researchers on the Khmer Rouge has told the Guardian he fears for his life after a two-year harassment campaign by state security forces he claims are attempting to prevent him from completing his latest film about the Killing Fields.

Award-winning film-maker Thet Sambath – whose 2010 documentary about the Khmer Rouge, Enemies of the People, was shortlisted for an Oscar – claims that uniformed soldiers and plainclothes "spies" working for the Cambodian government have repeatedly followed, harassed and chased him by car and motorbike, with the intention of "making [him] disappear".

"They are concerned I will reveal their true crime [through the new film] and … [that] their reputation will be destroyed," Sambath said. "I know too much about what really happened. They want me dead."

Sambath, a senior reporter for the Phnom Penh Post, said the harassment »

I'm sorry but this constant demand for public apologies really offends me | David Mitchell

Newt Gingrich's faux outrage at a joke made by Robert De Niro is the latest evidence of a thriving apology extortion racket in public life

Robert De Niro got into trouble last week for telling a joke. When introducing Michelle Obama at a Democratic fundraiser, he said: "Callista Gingrich, Karen Santorum, Ann Romney. Now do you really think our country is ready for a white first lady?" It went down well at the time but the next day Newt Gingrich seemed unamused: "What De Niro said last night was inexcusable and the president should apologise for him. It was… beyond the pale and he should be ashamed of himself."

That's a tough response. Gingrich reckons that De Niro's remark is so offensive that he can't even apologise for it himself. The apology has to come from the head of state. Not even Russell Brand ever went so far that »

The rise of 'mommy porn': UK writer lures Hollywood with bestselling erotic trilogy Fifty Shades

Major film deal in pipeline for El James, whose trilogy began as fan fiction online

She is the former west London housewife who has revolutionised the genre of erotic fiction with her bestselling trilogy of novels, Fifty Shades of Grey, whose combination of romantic storytelling and themes of bondage and domination are so steamy they have been dubbed "mommy porn".

For two days last week, James, a former TV writer, and her literary agent, Valerie Hoskins, were holed up in a wood-panelled conference room at Los Angeles's Soho House, accepting submissions for the first of the series from Hollywood's leading producers. The British pair were showered with incentives, including one studio presenting a »

George Clooney's satellite spies reveal secrets of Sudan's bloody army

Actor and activist funds a hi-tech project that is tracking troops and warning civilians of attacks

Nathaniel Raymond is the first to admit that he has an unusual job description. "I count tanks from space for George Clooney," said the tall, easygoing Massachusetts native as he sat in a conference room in front of a map of the Sudanese region of South Kordofan.

Close by, pins and ink scrawlings on the map detail the positions of Sudanese army forces and refugee populations in the troubled oil-producing province, where the Sudanese army is carrying out a brutal crackdown.

The wall next to Raymond has a series of satellite images projected on it. At the flick of a mouse, tiny images of tanks and military vehicles hove into view, caught by a satellite hundreds of miles above.

Raymond is director of the Satellite Sentinel Project (Ssp), which aims to use advanced satellite »
