Certificate PG-13   -   Action | Adventure | Fantasy

Perseus braves the treacherous underworld to rescue his father, Zeus, captured by his son, Ares, and brother Hades who unleash the ancient Titans upon the world.

The Buzz: Question: two years ago, didn't the first Titans installment kickstart the debate over the use of 3D? And while Perseus' first quest did fairly well worldwide, it was more accepted than beloved by fans. Confusing us more is the notion that director Jonathan Liebesman's work on Battle Los Angeles helped get him this job -- again, not exactly fan-favorite material there, either. With a revamped cast (a la G.I. Joe: Retaliation!) and a mouthful of a premise, we're hoping this second outing has the right look, feel, and epic attitude.

Certificate PG   -   Adventure | Comedy | Drama | Fantasy

An evil queen steals control of a kingdom and an exiled princess enlists the help of seven resourceful rebels to win back her birthright.

The Buzz: Two studio kingdoms dueled over their competing Snow White projects, with director Tarsem facing the unenviable task of turning around his spin on the fairy tale in under a year, besting by more than three months Snow White and the Huntsman, the more grown-up version created by Rupert Sanders. The first trailer has stunned us with what appears to be an iffy combination of forced camp and a light Disney touch. If this were a "Top Model" photo shoot, I'd be wowed, but an apparently rushed and ill-conceived fairy tale twist from the director of The Fall, I'm on the side of the early detractors, sorry.

Certificate R   -   Comedy | Sport

Labeled an outcast by his brainy family, a bouncer overcomes long odds to lead a team of under performing misfits to semi-pro hockey glory, beating the crap out of everything that stands in his way.

The Buzz: Michael Dowse is a legend (in Canada) for Fubar and its sequel, and here he teams up with the hockey obsessed Jay Baruchel, who co-stars and co-wrote the screenplay with Evan Goldberg (Seth Rogen's creative other half). And while Stifler will be busy promoting American Reunion as this sports comedy is released in the States, I'm wondering if he ever realized that he was making the guy version of Kansas City Bomber. Regardless, I'm way more primed for this movie than Kevin Smith's upcoming two-parter, Hit Somebody.

Certificate R   -   Horror | Thriller

Two children living in different countries are visited nightly by a faceless being who wants to take possession of them.
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Nope, it's not another home-invasion thriller; instead, this is an almost great psychological horror/fairy tale from Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, who started off so promising with Intact before accepting the Herculean task of following up 28 Days Later... ... This is a twisty premise that's about 90% cogent; Fresnadillo and his screenwriters crib from countless horror films, though their story commits to showing horror and anxiety from a child's perspective as it cleverly plays with timelines. The main problem: you can see the twist an hour before its reveal.

Certificate R Documentary

A documentary on peer-to-peer bullying in schools across America.

The Buzz: Hopefully Lee Hirsch, last seen in theaters with Amandla! A Revolution in Four Part Harmony, will unearth some perspectives and ideas for solutions not already seen in the myriad, urgent TV specials that have covered this unfortunate topic.

Certificate PG   -   Documentary

After bringing democracy to his country, President Mohamed Nasheed of the Maldives, the lowest-lying country in the world, takes up the fight to keep his homeland from disappearing under the sea.

The Buzz: Experienced documentarian Jon Shenk's politco/enviro call-to-action is my dark horse pick for art-house breakout of the spring season.
