I have to say: Brilliant analysis. The connection makes total sense to me, but I would have never thought of it on my own. You aren't going to find many people who'd impulsively align Ornette with Rollins over Coltrane (not with the word "experimentation" on the mind), but I'm convinced that they should.

Melody guys vs. harmony guys... at the end of the day, most people are one or the other. (Even if they can convince an audience that they're both.)

And then you'd also have to include rhythm guys, who range from Beethoven to Thelonious Monk to James Brown to David Byrne. They might know the most valuable secret of them all.
