New York Fashion Week

On July 19, 2012, the Los Angeles Times blog announced that the second youngest of the Kardashian family, Kendall Jenner, would be the face of Beverly Center’s Fashion’s Night Out campaign. This week, news of Kendall’s big gig is all over the fashion front.

The fourth annual Fashion’s Night Out will commence on September 6, 2012. Editors, models, celebrities, designers, and fashion-lovers will head to participating stores and malls across the country. Last year, events in eighteen countries and more than 4,500 events in the US alone featured limited-edition products, celebrity appearances, and performances.

For the fashion extravaganza, the Beverly Center chose rising fashion star Kendall Jenner as the face of their campaign. With all her modeling gigs in the past year, it’s difficult to keep up with this Kardashian:

Kendall’s first gig was a Grease themed photo shoot for Forever 21′s Twist Campaign. Before this shoot, she had no modeling experience. After getting some posing tips from sis Kim, she got comfortable in front of the camera and would model for a number of shoots after that. [Read more...]

Alice + Olivia fall 2012, Imaxtree

Alice + Olivia met Alice in Wonderland at this week’s fall 2012 presentation, one of quirkiest of New York Fashion Week. Models embraced each corner of the playful studio with looks that left attendees—including Kevin Jonas and his wife Danielle Jonas, Gossip Girl’s Kelly Rutherford, Jenna Dewan-Tatum, Kristin Chenoweth, and Smash’s Megan Hilty—in a whimsical mood.

Glasses of champagne, Magnum ice cream bars, and custom A+O “Nolita” cocktails danced their way around the floor as guests mingled and captured close-ups of the doll-faced models. Designer Stacey Bendet created a line that had something for every Alice + Olivia girl. From body-con sequin gowns that bellowed down to the floor for the glamorous A+O girl to the lace-loving Parisian and of course the tulle-devoted princess.

When we heard that OPI’s Holiday 2011 Collection was in fact a Muppets line, we nearly didn’t believe it. But OPI has done it again and will be debuting their Muppets collection this December. And it totally just made us fall in love with them all over again. With names like “Warm and Fozzy,” “Fresh Frog of Bel Air,” and “Meep Meep Meep,” it’s pretty hard not to-especially when their following in the steps of their fabulous ‘Miss Universe’ Collection. Can’t wait to see Miss Piggy, Kermit, and the rest of the gang in full action for OPI. Here’s a sneak peak for what’s in store:

In other equally awesome (but non-OPI) related news. With New York Fashion Week just around the corner, we’ve found out some pretty exciting beauty happening which will be taking place very shortly. Alexander Wang will be joining the likes of Prabal Gurung and Tracey Reese, to debut his very own nail color collection for Sally Hansen. We wonder if the models walking in his show will be wearing his new colors!

Some of you may have experienced New York Fashion Week from the comfort of your couch or perhaps snagged a chance to help backstage, but you will never experience the fashion world’s most celebrated weeks of the year like this. The New York Fashion Week documentary, ‘The Tents,’ provides a full 360-view of the glamorous and not-so glamorous the fashion industry can be.

While the documentary covers the creation of Fashion Week by the CFDA back in 1993, to the new IMG ownership, and to present day, it also reveals behind-the-scenes footage from fashion pioneers, designers, and prominent figures in the fashion industry—not to mention, hilarious commentary from fashion stylist and personality Robert Verdi, to the queen of simplicity and comfort, American designer Donna Karan.

“Looking at the success of recent fashion documentaries such as, ‘The September Issue’ and ‘Valentino: The Last Emperor,’ there is clearly a burgeoning interest in behind-the-scene stories about the fashion industry,” says ‘The Tents’ director James Belzer.

In New York City, we have an avenue ardently labeled “Fashion District.” So imagine the shocker when the film reveals that New York was relatively unknown in the fashion world. But New York Fashion Week president Fern Mallis changed that misconception for the world to see. The long-time NY Fashion Week location Bryant Park (the heart of the Fashion District) set tears in many eyes when it was announced in early 2010 Lincoln Center on the Upper West Side would be the new location for the event.

If you’re in town and planning to watch this doc, then suit up—there will be fashionistas and fashionistos everywhere, maybe even some with cameras—and familiarize yourself with the fashion industry jargon. Know fashion power players like Fern Mallis, Suzy Menkes, Nina Garcia, and fashion terms like “haute couture,” “S/S” for “Spring/Summer,” and “A/W” for “Autumn/Winter” collections.

There will be a wider release of the documentary this September, but you can buy your tickets to the preview of ‘The Tents’ at the SVA Theatre here for $14. Hope to see you there tomorrow!

Boho Nerd at Anna Sui

by Perri Tomkiewicz on February 18, 2011

Anna Sui, the queen of retro-chic, mod, tribal-inspired women’s wear, did not disappoint with her newest style hybrid for her fall 2011 collection: the nerdy bohemian.

A lesser talent might not have been able to pull off such a smattering of florals, geometrics, tribal patterns, lace, stripes, and bold colors while adding an element of bookworm, but Sui—a seasoned veteran in the fashion game—did so effortlessly. The festive collection was complete with furs, fringes, printed tights, thick rimmed spectacles, and her usual exciting color palette, including a striking absinthe green.
