by Gitesh Pandya on Sunday, Nov. 11 2012, 04:42 PM

James Bond won a landslide victory at the North American box office which finally got the latest 007 adventure Skyfall which continued to break franchise records. The 23rd film in the 50-year-old series opened to an estimated $87.8M this weekend from 3,505 theaters for a stunning $25,050 average beating out lofty industry expectations to become the biggest Bond opening ever. Adding in Thursday's $2.2M from an early full-day launch in 463 premium large format screens (including 320 IMAX) the four-day bow came to an eye-popping $90M. Daniel Craig anchored for the third time, Judi Dench returned for her third decade in the series, and newcomers Javier Bardem and Ralph Fiennes joined the cast in this installment.

Box Office Guru Wrapup: Ralph & Flight Make B.O. Soar (52 comments)

by Gitesh Pandya on Sunday, Nov. 04 2012, 03:28 PM

The holiday box office season started with a bang thanks to the one-two punch of two new releases that pulled in sold-out audiences - the animated video game comedy Wreck-It Ralph and the Denzel Washington drama Flight. The pair led the top ten to a healthy 19% jump over the same frame last year. And with tens of millions affected last week by the deadly hurricane Sandy, it was questionable what impact theaters would see but compelling product brought people out of their homes and into the multiplexes putting the film industry in a good position going into the final weeks of the year.

by Ryan Fujitani on Monday, Nov. 19 2012, 04:20 PM

This may be the week of Thanksgiving and Black Friday, but it looks like home video distributors didn't much care. There is so little coming out tomorrow that we're limiting our selection to just four entries. Thankfully, they're all fairly notable items, so click through to see the full list!

RT on DVD & Blu-Ray: Brave, Savages, and The Watch (37 comments)

by RT Staff on Tuesday, Nov. 13 2012, 02:02 PM

This week on home video, we've got a pretty big variety to choose from. The best we have to offer ranges between a solid Pixar effort, an engrossing documentary, and a few classics. Then we have a few films that left critics largely undecided, and lastly there's at least one misfire that's at least an interesting misfire. Click through for the full list!

This week on home video, we get the recent reboot of a Marvel icon, a couple of Christmas movies for kids, a drama that should have been better than it was, an indie comedy critics liked, and a Billy Wilder classic on Blu-ray. Click through for the full list!

Critics Consensus: Life of Pi Is Certified Fresh (58 comments)

by Tim Ryan on Tuesday, Nov. 20 2012, 07:55 PM

Happy Thanksgiving! This week at the movies, we've got a furry castaway (Ang Lee's Life of Pi starring Suraj Sharma); folkloric fighters (Rise of the Guardians, with voice work from Chris Pine and Alec Baldwin); teen guerillas (Red Dawn, starring Chris Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson); and unhappy singles (Silver Linings Playbook, starring Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence). What do the critics have to say?

Critics Consensus: The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 Is a Decent Send-Off (64 comments)

by Tim Ryan on Friday, Nov. 16 2012, 12:09 PM

This week at the multiplex, we've got "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2," starring Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson in the final installment of the wildly popular vampire franchise, and Steven Spielberg's hotly-anticipated biopic "Lincoln," starring Daniel Day-Lewis as Honest Abe. And in limited release, we've got "Silver Linings Playbook," a romantic comedy starring Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence, as well as Joe Wright's unorthodox adaptation of "Anna Karenina," starring Keira Knightley in the title role. There's no middle ground on the Twilight series: either you're enraptured by the tale of Bella Swan and her supernatural paramours, or you're mystified by its appeal.

Critics Consensus: Skyfall Is Certified Fresh (59 comments)

by Tim Ryan on Friday, Nov. 09 2012, 12:04 PM

This week at the movies brings only one new wide release: Skyfall, the latest James Bond adventure, starring Daniel Craig and Javier Bardem. What do the critics have to say? Director Sam Mendes is best known for his portrayals of suburban malaise (his credits include American Beauty and Revolutionary Road), so at first blush he?d seem to be an odd choice to direct a James Bond movie. However, critics say Skyfall is a nearly perfect balance of drama and action that winks at 007?s storied cinematic past while delving deeper into the psyche of the most iconic of movie characters.

Total Recall: Ang Lee's Best Movies (40 comments)

by Jeff Giles on Tuesday, Nov. 20 2012, 07:54 PM

Over the course of his Academy Award-winning career, Ang Lee has crossed over from Taiwanese box office successes to American arthouse classics and Hollywood blockbusters, proving his hand with family drama, comedy, period pieces, epic martial arts action, romance, and even superheroes along the way. But up 'til now, he's never tried making a 3D adventure about a shipwrecked boy and his CGI tiger -- so in honor of this weekend's Certified Fresh Life of Pi, we decided to take a look back at Lee's wildly eclectic filmography, and came up with a list that has something for pretty much everyone. You know what that means: It's time for Total Recall!

Total Recall: Kristen Stewart's Best Movies (83 comments)

by Jeff Giles on Thursday, Nov. 15 2012, 09:21 AM

For the last couple of years, Kristen Stewart has been The Twilight Saga's Bella Swan -- and the middle of one of the most hotly contested love triangles in recent pop culture history. The debate between Team Jacob and Team Edward reaches its senses-shattering conclusion this week, with the release of Breaking Dawn Part 2, but no matter which side you're on, there's no denying that Stewart's film career has always been about more than vampires and werewolves. Over the last decade, she's assembled a crowded, surprisingly eclectic filmography, and Breaking Dawn Part 2 is only one part of a busy year that also includes her turn in On the Road, debuting December 21; we decided to join in the fun by celebrating her work with this week's Total Recall. Without further ado, here are Kristen Stewart's best-reviewed movies!

Total Recall: Daniel Craig's Best Movies (72 comments)

by Jeff Giles on Thursday, Nov. 08 2012, 03:21 PM

There aren't many actors who have the depth and sensitivity to carry indie fare and enough charisma to lead a blockbuster franchise, but with one foot in the art house and the other firmly planted at the multiplex, Daniel Craig is one star who can have his Layer Cake and eat it too. With his third Bond outing, Skyfall arriving in theaters this weekend, we decided now would be the perfect time to take a fresh look at some of his critical highlights. However, our list doesn't count a handful of brief appearances and cameo roles that are also worth checking out.

Weekly Ketchup: Empire Strikes Back Writer Returns to Franchise (21 comments)

by Greg Dean Schmitz on Wednesday, Nov. 21 2012, 01:20 PM

This week's Ketchup is coming to you on a Wednesday morning instead of Friday evening because of Thanksgiving Thursday giving pretty much everyone in Hollywood a much, much shorter work week. So, half a week means only half the usual number of stories (five this week, from the standard ten).

The week in Hollywood movie development news -- following last week's announcement of Disney's plans for Star Wars Episode VII -- seemed almost late-August-like in terms of relative activity. What did make the news this week included stories about The Giver, Tarzan, Transformers 4, the not-going-to-happen-anymore sequel to Top Gun, and yes, indeed, more stories about Star Wars Episode VII.

Five Favorite Films with Hitchcock Director Sacha Gervasi (7 comments)

by Luke Goodsell on Wednesday, Nov. 21 2012, 01:45 PM

Arguably the most famous director in cinema history (and the auteur behind the recently crowned Greatest Movie of All Time), Alfred Hitchcock can't be an easy subject for an on-screen biography. British-born director Sacha Gervasi has taken a shot at it with this week's Hitchcock, which adapts -- with some creative license -- Stephen Rebello's 1990 book Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho, while exploring the relationship between Hitch (played by Anthony Hopkins) and his wife Alma Reville (Helen Mirren), as he fights to make the thriller that would prove one of his biggest and most influential hits. Gervasi, known for his hugely entertaining 2007 metal documentary Anvil! The Story of Anvil, called in to chat about Hitchcock, the challenge of taking on a movie icon, working with Hopkins, and separating the man from the mythology. Read on for that, but first, he talks about his five favorite films.

Five Favorite Films with Starlet Director Sean Baker (18 comments)

by RT Staff on Wednesday, Nov. 07 2012, 01:17 PM

One of the buzz films at this year's SXSW festival, writer-director Sean Baker's Starlet explores the unusual friendship between a 21-year-old actress (Dree Hemingway) and an 85-year-old woman (Besedka Johnson) when their lives cross paths in California's San Fernando Valley. Featuring breakout performances -- especially from Hemingway, the daughter of actress Mariel and great-granddaughter of writer Ernest -- the movie is getting early praise from critics ahead of its release in New York and Los Angeles this week. We caught up with director Sean Baker recently, who shared with us an interesting list of his five favorite films.

For the little kids, there's Rise of the Guardians, featuring Santa and the Tooth Fairy. For older teens, there's the visually sweeping Life of Pi. Family Movie Guide: The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 and Brave (11 comments)

by Tim Ryan on Thursday, Nov. 15 2012, 09:22 AM

This week is relatively slim pickings for family-friendly moviegoing. In theaters, we've got The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2, the conclusion to the teen-centric vampire franchise; and on DVD we've got Brave, Pixar's animated ode to girl power. In addition, Steven Spielberg's Lincoln, which we profiled last week, opens in wide release. However, other noteworthy releases, including Anna Karenina (in limited release) and The Watch (on DVD) are rated R, so proceed with caution. Without further ado, check out the best bets for family viewing this week!

Grae Drake talks with the incredible cast, including James Spader, Sally Field, and Joseph Gordon Levitt, about the challenges in bringing this story to life, and what audiences can take from watching it.
