New 'Man of Steel' Poster Is Unexpectedly Arresting

Man of Steel

Do they make handcuffs out of kryptonite now?

That's one of the questions posed by the new poster for Zack Snyder's Man of Steel, which depicts a manacled Superman (Henry Cavill) being led to a presumably unfriendly destination by a group of what appear to be soldiers.

As for what this might mean for the movie, well...let's not rush to conclusions. Snyder and Warner Bros. know a lot of people are waiting to see what Man of Steel is all about -- and they know there's plenty of skepticism regarding whether or not Superman can even be relevant as a comic book or film character in the 21st century -- so what better way to gin up interest for the movie than showing people something unexpected, even if it only refers to a minor plot point?

In any case, we should know more after the new Man of Steel trailer debuts before screenings of The Hobbit next weekend -- and all will be revealed on June 14, 2013, when the movie arrives on traditional and IMAX/IMAX 3D screens in all its caped glory. See if you can discern any clues from the synopsis:

In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time. Clark Kent/Kal-El is a young twentysomething journalist who feels alienated by powers beyond anyone’s imagination. Transported to Earth years ago from Krypton, an advanced alien planet, Clark struggles with the ultimate question – Why am I here? Shaped by the values of his adoptive parents Martha (Diane Lane) and Jonathan Kent (Kevin Costner), Clark soon discovers that having super abilities means making very difficult decisions. But when the world needs stability the most, it comes under attack. Will his abilities be used to maintain peace or ultimately used to divide and conquer? Clark must become the hero known as “Superman,” not only to shine as the world’s last beacon of hope but to protect the ones he loves.
