Guillermo del Toro's giant robot/monster flick Pacific Rim is still a couple months away, but we know Earth's forces didn't get it done against the giant creatures threatening humanity because Legendary Pictures has commissioned a sequel. And that usually means we'll be seeing a lot more of those giant creatures called the Kaiju.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Travis Beacham, who wrote the screenplay for the first movie, will return to write the sequel with del Toro. While it is not definite that del Toro will return to direct the sequel, barring a scheduling conflict, the chances are high that he will.
However, if a sequel is to happen with del Toro at the helm, we probably won't get to see it until 2016 or 2017.
Del Toro is looking to shoot the horror movie Crimson Peak in January 2014 and, assuming he works fast on that one, he may be able to shoot Pacific Rim 2 in 2014 for a late 2015 release. More realistically though, expect the sequel to come out in 2016.
Of course, if another director is to take over for del Toro, we can expect the sequel to come out earlier.
