Certificate R   -   Comedy

Metascore: 51/100 (4 reviews)
A look at the lives of Pete and Debbie a few years after the events of Knocked Up.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: One of the smartest ideas Judd Apatow has made since he segued into Hollywood super-producer mode was to train the focus on the supporting characters from his best comic environment and continue the story of the people we like the most. So there will be no Seth Rogen or Katherine Heigl nosing around as we see catch up with Pete (Paul Rudd) and Debbie (Leslie Mann) some time after Knocked Up. Leslie Mann is funnier than KU and Bridesmaids combined.

  -   Action | Drama | History | Thriller

Metascore: 99/100 (10 reviews)
A chronicle of the decade-long hunt for al-Qaeda terrorist leader Osama bin Laden after the September 2001 attacks, and his death at the hands of the Navy S.E.A.L. Team 6 in May, 2011.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Kathryn Bigelow's never known the level of controversy her follow-up to The Hurt Locker has generated. Even before cameras rolled on the recreation of the events leading up to the killing of Osama bin Laden, a government watchdog group has filed a lawsuit against the CIA and the Department of Defense since details of the reported meeting between the agencies, Bigelow, and writer Mark Boal have not been released via the Freedom of Information Act. Seems like the filmmakers have been privy to classified information. It's the sort of real-world drama the industry and those who write about it could mutually benefit from, a reminder of when American films used to resonate beyond our desire for entertainment. And how righteous the Internet can be as well.

Certificate PG-13   -   Action | Crime | Drama

A homicide investigator digs deeper into a case involving a trained military sniper who shot five random victims.
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Almost exactly one year after Ghost Protocol comes Tom Cruise's reunion with Christopher McQuarrie, who wrote and produced Valkyrie. McQuarrie is taking his second turn behind the camera as director of this adaptation of Lee Child's novel, which has been on the Paramount lot since 2008. It's a tall order to make a movie as universally entertaining as M:I4, but if the world embraces Cruise as homicide investigator Jack Reacher, there's a bounty of other Reacher adventures from which to choose.

Certificate PG-13   -   Comedy

As inventor Andy Brewster is about to embark on the road trip of a lifetime, a quick stop at his mom's house turns into an unexpected cross-country voyage with her along for the ride.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: This sort of sounds like the movie version of those Snickers commercials with Aretha Franklin and Liza Minelli, except with pot instead of chocolate.

Certificate G   -   Animation | Adventure | Comedy | Family | Fantasy

Metascore: 78/100 (34 reviews)
Monsters generate their city's power by scaring children, but they are terribly afraid themselves of being contaminated by children, so when one enters Monstropolis, top scarer Sulley finds his world disrupted.
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Sulley & Mike return to the big screen in 3D to reintroduce themselves before we go back in time to their early days at Monsters University this June. Does this mean Bill Crystal will host the Oscars again, too?

  -   Fantasy

Two young people journey through the dreamlike worlds of Cirque du Soleil to find each other.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Seems like producer James Cameron and director Andrew Adamson are hedging their bets on Cirque du Soleil luring in family audiences seeking an alternative from standard holiday-season films this year. The first trailer ruled. Is the early closing of Iris -- the expensive Los Angeles-based Cirque production that was supposed to run for a decade -- any indication of box-office doom?

Certificate PG-13   -   Action | Drama | Thriller

Metascore: 79/100 (7 reviews)
An account of a family caught, with tens of thousands of strangers, in the mayhem of one of the worst natural catastrophes of our time.
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: I've had my eye on Juan Antonio Bayona's English-language debut because I love projects that maintain a low profile throughout their production. While sensitive to the traumatizing real-world event that inspired his story of a family working to survive a natural disaster, it's the scope of the visual effects and the presence of actual-real lead actors that have me stoked for a hopefully thoughtful action/drama.

Certificate R   -   Adventure | Drama

Metascore: 54/100 (5 reviews)
Young writer Sal Paradise has his life shaken by the arrival of free-spirited Dean Moriarty and his girl, Marylou. As they travel across the country, they encounter a mix of people who each impact their journey indelibly.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: It's been almost ten years since The Motorcycle Diaries -- fifteen since Central Station! -- and all the while Walter Salles has spent his non-directing time championing projects by other South American filmmakers. Now comes his take on Jack Kerouac's enduring novel - a reunion for Salles and Diaries screenwriter Jose Rivera - with a cast worthy of a recent Soderbergh movie, a burden of weighty expectations, and Kristen Stewart embroiled in Marylou-adjacent man troubles. Fortunately, in this case, Stewart doesn't need to atone for her behavior with Twilighters.

Certificate R   -   Drama

Set in suburban New Jersey the 1960s, a group of friends form a rock band and try to make it big.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: While the premise doesn't exactly stoke my interest, David Chase's character-writing ability is evident in some of today's best television programs, and his emotional scenarios are never strained or false. The only thing that bums me out is no role for Drea de Matteo.

Certificate PG-13   -   Drama | Romance

Metascore: 91/100 (5 reviews)
Georges and Anne are in their eighties. They are cultivated, retired music teachers. Their daughter, who is also a musician, lives abroad with her family. One day, Anne has an attack. The couple's bond of love is severely tested.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: "Leave it to Michael Haneke to take a topic as enfeebled as the onset of old age and give it an almost urgent and dangerous edge. The once beautiful accidents of nature, Jean-Louis Trintignant and Emmanuelle Riva have become exquisite works of art. A measured but gratifying work." -- Keith Simanton

December 28

  -   Drama | Western

With the help of his mentor, a slave-turned-bounty hunter sets out to rescue his wife from a brutal Mississippi plantation owner.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: This December is stacked with the sort of fare that could stand up to any summer blockbuster. And while last year's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was an indication that holiday audiences might not warm to violent content, an original Quentin Tarantino is in a different league than a David Fincher adaptation. If anyone can turn ultraviolence and coarse language into a hit ... And let's not forget that audiences seem to prefer Leonardo DiCaprio when he's in original and cool movies, like Inception and Catch Me If You Can, so we expect this to eclipse The Great Gatsby.

Certificate PG-13   -   Drama | Musical | Romance

Metascore: 55/100 (7 reviews)
In 19th-century France, Jean Valjean, who for decades has been hunted by the ruthless policeman Javert after he breaks parole, agrees to care for factory worker Fantine's daughter, Cosette. The fateful decision changes their lives forever.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Director Tom Hooper goes further back in history for his follow up to The King's Speech, opting for the latest cinematic take on Victor Hugo's novel, what could be the second best adaptation after Raymond Bernard's exhaustive 1934 work. Before cameras rolled, the project has been positioned as a seemingly unbeatable Oscar candidate, though I say it's more of a career stabilizer for many, including Universal execs.

Certificate PG   -   Comedy

Artie and Diane agree to look after their three grandkids when their type-A helicopter parents need to leave town for work. Problems arise when the kids' 21st-century behaviors collide with Artie and Diane's old-school methods.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Can a broad, contemporary comedy add any length to Billy Crystal's comeback streak? It's hard to pinpoint the target audience here -- harried moms and dads, perhaps, and their parents. Still, Crystal's take on parenting is more welcome than Jonah Hill getting paid to swear at children in The Sitter.

Certificate R Drama

Metascore: 52/100 (5 reviews)
A salesman for a natural gas company experiences life-changing events after arriving in a small town, where his corporation wants to tap into the available resources.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: We'd love to know exactly what transpired to make Matt Damon bow out of directing this enviroment-minded drama but remain as its star; Damon's industry edge has surfaced since The Bourne Ultimatum and we have ever-increasing respect for the former Oscar wunderkind who has matured into a talky, opinionated fortysomething who is dedicated to a clutch of filmmaker. A wave of '90s nostalgia finds Damon reuniting with his Good Will Hunting director Gus Van Sant, though we are out and proud defenders of their other project together, Gerry.

Certificate R   -   Documentary

Metascore: 88/100 (4 reviews)
An examination of a failure of justice in the case against the West Memphis Three.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Though Jason Baldwin, Damien Wayne Echols, and Jessie Misskelley are out of prison, their legal saga continues. Amy Berg's documentary wisely summarizes the Paradise Lost trilogy before moving into the present day, as the three men were semi-exonerated in the case of three murdered Arkansas boys from two decades ago and made their first steps to re-enter society. The most challenging aspect of of this work -- aside from the maddening Alford Plea that secured their freedom -- are the opinions of those who so fully believe in the judicial system made no mistakes here.
