This is final, Zero Dark Thirty will win the Oscar and the BAFTA Awards

The Return of the Waterboy Jerry Benedict

Am I the only one who hated The Hurt Locker? I only ask this because I think that Zero Dark Thirty will be the same. I have friend who work in the Army, and he said that the movie was so inaccurate that they should've put in more action scenes to make it entertaining. Honestly, my friend is actually not going to want to go to this one. I mean who even cares about Osama anymore. The guy's dead. And while I commend Seal Team Six, I feel that this movie will disrespect all of them, dead or alive. Also, does anyone think that Argo should have like 24 awards?

The Hurt Locker was most certainly overrated. Its entire message was already said better in Platoon more than two decades prior. Zero Dark Thirty from the sound of it is nothing more than a current event reel. Anyone who has watched the news within the past year or so already knows everything there is needed to know. Also the movie doesn't take a hard stance from what everyone is reporting, so there was absolutely no creativity needed. It's Hollywood desperately trying to make an easy buck on the backs of others. It's tasteless and unnecessary, but it's no surprise considering there were already two (that I know of) 9/11 movies that are far worse in that regard. Then again, people seem to eat this garbage up...

Kudos on that one. I don't actually hate The Hurt Locker, I found the film to be quite sophisticated but nevertheless I agree that the film is too overrated. By the way, what the hell? I know this is only the beginning of the race but why do Skyfall and The Dark Knight Rises didn't receive as much recognition as they should? This is blasphemous...

Dec 17 - 06:47 PM

Amen to that. Skyfall and The Dark Knight Rises were easily two of some of the better films of the year. Looper is another one that definitely deserves more recognition.

"Its entire message was already said better in Platoon more than two decades prior"

Granted, but the thing is I don't recall a backstabber happening in "The Hurt Locker", and I also don't recall soldiers just brazeningly shooting innocent civilians while on a helicopter either or did that happened in Apocalypse Now. And I also find it interesting that after all these years viewers are still saying that a war in the desert is the same as war in the jungle. If you don't know how to adapt to war films that take place on Iraq/ Afganistan which the US army can't tell between suicide bombers than the ones who aren't "is" a different kind of war than fighting in the jungle aganist the Viet Cong than just say so. The bomb disposal units in The Hurt Locker are the most accurately depicted than any other desert war film so far! Aside from the fact that it was counselled by real bomb disposal units (60 Minutes) who were actually partake in the war itself! Do you even know why it's even called The Hurt Locker? Because I know you guys can google this question!

I loved the Hurt Locker. It was a story that needed telling.

I agree Zach. Amazing film and one that will be watched in history classes 50 years from now as a representation of the life of an solider in Iraq.

You are not the only one. And yes, I thought Argo was terrific. But I personally enjoyed Lincoln far more. As of now, my favorite film of the year is Cloud Atlas. Oddly enough, Cloud Atlas is one of those films I can understand somebody completely hating though. I expect Daniel Day Lewis to win an Oscar for his performance as Abraham Lincoln.

Former Marine here...I didn't hate the movie, but damn was it completely inaccurate. It made it really hard to enjoy, and I think it is overrated. I'm concerned about Zero Dark Thirty for the same reason. Will still watch it though. Argo so far is my favorite movie of the year, but I also really liked Moonrise Kingdom.

Dec 18 - 09:13 AM

Dave J

Dave J

No disrespect to you as a former Marine, but you just said that the film was really hard to enjoy but was it because it was inaccurate or was it because it was to close to home because The Hurt Locker was guided by actual Bomb disposal units who served down there - they were interviewed for a 60 Minutes segment. And besides the film wasn't about you but about some other soldiers- in your opinion you don't find that the film was not an accurate portrayl about any soldier in any kind of way whatsoever! I really want to understand this?

Dude, Renner would have been Court Marshalled (forgive me if I misspelled) for half the things he did. He broke to many rule. Also, no disrespect to Marines, my friend said that everyone who is in the Marine Corps. don't coe out with the best mental state. I don't know abot you guys, but Renner looked as if he hadn't seen nothing when that poor guy *semi spoiler* explodes. Thank god he only watches what goes down from a distance.

I feel exactly the same about Dark Zero Thirty and Hurt Locker. Loved Argo and Moonrise Kingdom as well. Excellent movies.

Dave J

Well then, this raises to another question, how many great war films had you seen about the Iraq/ Afganistan war and explain to me why those films are better than The Hurt Locker?

And one last thing, because everyone already knows that Osama Bin Laden is dead, does that mean you won't be supporting the actual SEAL who wrote the book on it as well called "No Easy Day" written under the pen name Mark Owen since as you say "I mean who even cares about Osama anymore"?

Les Miz might sweep a la The King's Speech- right now, ZDT's dominating and SLP and Lincoln might run out of steam before we get to the guilds, in which case Les Miz could pull it off.

Not with 75% it won't.

Dec 17 - 06:50 PM

Gage Kent

Gage Kent

No it won't. The field is too strong this year. Zero Dark Thirty, Argo, and Lincoln are ALL historical and ALL recieving wider critical acclaim. If it means anything, general audiences seemed to like Argo a lot too. Les Miserables doesn't look like anything special, but my opinion might change after actually seeing it. Anne Hathaway is supposed to be amazing in it. We shall see.

Dec 18 - 02:41 AM

Bigbrother

Big Brother

Yeah, I found that strange since what I remember of Les Mis Hathaways role isn't the most robust. Maybe she pulled a Judy Dench where she's only in it for 5 minutes, but makes a huge impact.

Dec 18 - 02:16 PM

Zuriel Castillo

Zuriel Castillo

I really doubt this. I feel like Les Mis is already losing steam. The reviews are out and the hype is fading because of them, much like The Hobbit. It'll get a Best Pic nod, and a few acting nods, possibly a win for anne hathaway.

ZDT, has a good release date...as opposed to Argo (I think critics are forgetting it). I think the comebacks may be the master and beast of the southern wild.

I know this sounds stupid, but where is Ted or 21 Jump Street. Those two movies are really surprising comedies. They should've been nominated for an award for best comedy, or actor (Mark Wahlberg), or something of that sort.

HOLD ON RT - How to Survive a Plague is definitely at 100%, and Moonrise Kingdom is at 94%. Above, it says the two movies are both at 88%, which is incorrect.

From the looks of this list, it seems as if Zero Dark Thirty will have a clean house at the Academy Awards. Just like the extremely overrated Hurt Locker. The academy just eats that stuff up lol. And I'm a little shocked how The Master is ranked second here. Marvelous acting, but the film practically put me to sleep! I get the "message" they were trying to put through there, but the film never escalated from start to finish. I'd rather see a film like Playbook, Lincoln or Argo. But then again, those films weren't exactly "mind blowing" to me. Yes, they were great films. Very well done, and Argo especially had me on the edge of my seat. But this year of films wasn't too big of a year. There were some very superb foreign films I saw, but when it came to Hollywood, they didn't putt out any amazing stuff. But I am not complaining. I just wish this year for Best Picture the running would be a little more tight of a race.

Dec 17 - 09:43 PM

montezbush1

Pretty sure the academy DOESN'T eat up controversial movies about modern war? Wtf? And if you don't think hollywood hasn't put out any good films this year, then you can drown in your horrible taste, my friend.

Dec 17 - 11:26 PM

Gage Kent

Gage Kent

I wouldn't say a clean house, but it has good chances of taking multiple awards. If you thought this year was not great for films, I feel sorry for you. Does anything impress you? Let me see here: The Master, Perks of Being a Wallflower, Beasts of the Southern Wild, The Sessions, Flight, Silver Linings Playbook, The Hobbit, Les Miserables, Django Unchained, Lincoln, Cloud Atlas, Argo, Moonrise Kingdom, Skyfall, Looper, The Dark Knight Rises, Arbitrage, End of Watch, Paranorman. And I am pretty sure I missed a few. Wake the fuck up man. This year was awesome for films.

I think that was mainly because they didn't want to give the best picture award to another Spielberg film. That's actually one of the problems I think that will face Lincoln, Les Mis and Zero Dark Thirty at the oscars in that all of them were from directors who have already won the best director oscar (Spielberg having won twice) and delivered a best pic winning film (with the latter two winning it quite recently as well). I honestly wouldn't be surprised if come oscar night Django Unchained pulls an upset come oscar night as their usual way of giving a director his due (after all, people have been clamoring for Tarantino to get his oscar for nearly two decades).

Dec 18 - 10:47 AM

Gage Kent

Gage Kent

This is why the Oscars suck... politics. "Oh, we shouldn't give this director an award because they have already recieved too many awards." It is bullshit. Give the awards to the people who deserve it. End of story.

I know I sound like a troll, but I honestly feel like End Of Watch, and Cabin In The Woods should get best supporting and best original script nominations. If it had the Coens, Tarantino's, or Biglow's name on it nobody would question it

Dec 18 - 05:45 AM

Bigbrother

Big Brother

Honestly though, Cabin in the Woods wasn't made to win awards. Joss Whedon makes unpretentious movie's for common people and nerds to enjoy. His style is never going to be what the Oscars look at like the folks you mentioned. Can't speak to End of Watch since I haven't seen it yet.
