Aegis - A Brief History

Aegis was founded in 2002 by Lt Col Tim Spicer and three partners, Mark Bullough, Jeffrey Day and Dominic Armstrong. In a world of rapidly evolving geopolitical change they saw the need for a company that understood how to respond to new threats and their consequences for governments and multinational corporations – one that could provide much broader solutions than physical security alone. The strategic vision, therefore, was for an organisation that encapsulated the entire risk management process of identifying, analysing and mitigating risk in a variety of scenarios, and it is this approach that most clearly sets Aegis apart from its main competitors today.

After 20 years in the army and with experience of the wider industry sector, Tim Spicer was and is the visionary behind Aegis’s development. Mark Bullough, a colleague from the British Army who went on to a highly successful 20-year career in investment banking with Flemings, has focused on leading the external growth and development of the business. Jeffrey Day, an industrial entrepreneur with broad experience of start-ups and high-growth businesses across a diverse range of sectors, has provided the strategic management focus. Dominic Armstrong, a senior strategic analyst and colleague of Mark Bullough in banking, joined shortly after to develop a research and intelligence consultancy within the overall company.

These four men and their collective experience have taken Aegis to a position as one of the world’s foremost providers of risk management services. It has a reputation for setting and delivering the gold standard in contingency operations to world governments in hazardous environments. As Aegis went from strength to strength as a business, the Founders placed themselves at the forefront of moves to have this new and dynamic industry recognised and regulated. As a result they are extremely proud of Aegis's track record and the widespread praise it has won from the numerous government-controlled audit bodies that have examined the company’s operations since its founding.

Today, Aegis can look back on a history of fulfilling a wide range of challenging and ground-breaking missions in extremely tough environments in more than 40 countries for 18 governments, several top multinationals and the United Nations. But although the company has enjoyed significant growth and now employs professional management to cover all day-to-day business activities, the Founders’ primary interests and passions remain the same and they continue to be at the heart of the operations and expansion of the wider Aegis Group.
