Skylon

Images

  • Rendering of a rebuilt Skylon in London

Other Information

  • Skylon was designed to counter the materiality of the nearby Dome of Discovery.
  • It was a needle suspended in mid air by tension cables and floodlit at night.
  • Skylon was destroyed on the orders of Winston Churchill in 1952 for being a symbol of socialism. The cables were cut and it toppled over into the Thames.
  • There have been multiple plans to reerect it, the most recent in 2004, but so far a lack of funding to pay for the estimated 800,000 budget has prevented this.
