İstanbul Forum
Wed Oct 02 16:59:00 EEST 2013

It is fall again. Time to convene in İstanbul. In cooperation with Stiftung Mercator, the Center for Strategic Communication (STRATIM) is organizing the 4th İstanbul Forum. By the time this column will make it into print, hundreds of participants from the US, Europe, the Middle East and Turkey will be gathering in this majestic city to discuss the primary foreign policy issues of the region. When we began toying with the idea of initiating a major foreign policy forum in İstanbul we did not intend to focus solely on the Middle East. The idea was to discuss and debate issues and regions that were current and relevant. As we are preparing for the 4th İstanbul Forum I have to admit that we have been dealing primarily with Middle Eastern issues. In one sense this is normal as there are a large number of pressing issues in the Middle East that have a direct impact on Turkey. On the other hand, it is true the Turkish government has a distinct preference to become a central political actor in the region and has been spending considerable political capital there.
