Attacks on free press in Turkey
It appears that Turkey's powerful prime minister, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, has adopted a two-pronged assault on the right to freedom of expression and free press in Turkey against the background of increased criticism of his government amid outrageous revelations that the government has been running a massive profiling program on unsuspecting innocent citizens with no reasonable cause whatsoever.

The AK Party's missed opportunity?
Fred Halliday is a Marxist academic from the West who possesses quite a unique perspective --compared to some other intellectuals -- on our country and on the Islamic world. His general stance is described by a phrase taken from Farsi: “Ne garbzadegi, ne şarkzadegi,” meaning neither Western poisoning, nor Eastern poisoning. As he sees it, figures like Mao and Khomeini were subject to Eastern poisoning, while people like Buchanan and Hungtington were subject to Western poisoning.

GYV Declaration: The AKP and Hizmet on democracy
The Hizmet movement's Journalists and Writers Foundation (GYV) released a statement on its website on Thursday in which it said it is worried about the profiling of citizens, civic groups and public employees. It demanded that all the legislation that is reminiscent of the old, anti-democratic Turkey must be revised to ensure their full compliance with fundamental rights and freedoms.

In recent weeks, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan met with Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government leader Massoud Barzani in Diyarbakır.

Main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu's recent visit to the US, as well as some positive messages the party has made lately, appear to have renewed the hopes of some democrats.

Informality can be perceived as impolite
Turkish culture places great emphasis on respect, honor and pride. Honor is important and Turkish culture is strongly hierarchical and patriarchal.

Labor market participation rate not yet satisfactory
If politicians in industrialized countries worry about one thing, it is the state of the economy in general and the number of unemployed people in particular. Both issues are election makers or breakers.

Supremacy of law
President Abdullah Gül commented on a recent Constitutional Court decision, saying that the right to a fair trial of Ergenekon convicts Mustafa Balbay and Mehmet Haberal had been violated during the judicial process and that the court's ruling shows there is supremacy of law in the country.
