Corruption scandal will consolidate Turkish democracy
Right off the bat, I would like to say this: Don't let your heart be troubled much by what has been happening in Turkey recently. When all the dust settles in the aftermath of corruption, money laundering and racketeering involving higher-ups in the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), we will have the chance to lay the foundation for a democracy by consensus, which is the only way to rule a large country like Turkey with a relatively young population and rising middle class.

Overshadowing the graft probe
Though the two events -- the Gezi Park protests and the high-profile graft investigation -- are different in nature, there are many similarities in the way the government has handled both -- and in both, its handling has dealt a serious blow to the rule of law.

Why is the US being drawn into the game?
As expressed in a New York Times article from Dec. 21, 2013, "Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan [sic] on Saturday continued his embrace of what has traditionally been the strategy of Turkish politicians facing a crisis: Blame foreign powers, in this case the United States." The ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) is resorting to conspiracy theories to exonerate itself of serious charges on a corruption scandal. Doing so might tarnish Turkey's image abroad and hurt national interests.

We haven't seen this much even in coup eras
Every government wants to prevail over the judiciary. It does this to feel more "secure."

A region full of agonies
There are views suggesting that interstate conflicts and disagreements will take place in the Asia Pacific region. Maybe this might be the case but large powers will not turn their eyes elsewhere unless the Middle East reforms.

What's on table in second Geneva summit?
The Geneva II Middle East peace conference, which will kick off on Jan. 22, 2014 in Montreux and resume in Geneva on Jan. 24, 2014, is a major upcoming event in the international arena.

PM made the wrong choice
I have been taken aback by the statements made by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan during multiple rallies in various cities over the weekend. Clearly, he opted for a defensive attack strategy concerning the corruption scandal that is shaking up the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) rule.

Deepening crisis
As the Turkish government clamps down on protesters and attempts to hinder the corruption probe, Turkey is plunging deeper into a crisis that threatens to have a lasting impact on its society and economy.

Old familiar streets
Stomping along ice-encrusted pavements in Nevşehir last week I felt a sense of déjà vu creeping up on me. Suddenly it was two winters ago and I was making that same dreary trek back and forth from the office of the Nüfüs Dairesi (Population Department) to the office of the notary public clutching some official document that had to be “legalized” before anyone would actually accept it.

Blow to separation of powers
In a development that further raised suspicions about the government's interference in an ongoing corruption investigation which has extended to several Cabinet ministers, the government has made an amendment to regulations governing the Interior and Justice Ministries that makes it obligatory for police chiefs to share information and documents about an ongoing probe with their superiors.
