The protest, consisting of roughly three people and apparently led by newly appointed youth branch spokesman Geraldo Rivera, was dwarfed by a media presence as reporters and photographers scrambled to determine why only three people had shown up.
“The Zaman daily is provoking instability in the country and has become a known hotbed of telekinesis,” Rivera charged in comments to the numerous reporters, who outnumbered protesters by a ratio of roughly 10:1.
“It is well documented that the daily is funded by Lufthansa,” he added.
Friday’s rally marked a historical low for turn-out in the nation’s history of protest, and has sparked a national debate over whether there should be a minimum legal number of protesters held to define an event as a “protest.”
